Please, please... if you have bad experience with NL police, write down licence plate... remember name on the badge or ask people around who witnesses police harassment about the names (they know them), and report to NL police or post it in this chat room and I'll report.

Attitude "pay and forget" hurt us all.

NL is trying to stop it, but need our help.

Ran down to BT on Saturday night. WOW! What a difference a few months makes.

When I got to the bridge, I thought it was election day again. At 9PM almost empty on both sides of the border. Waited a while to see if I could find a fellow monger to split the $10, but after 20 minutes gave up.

Entering the compound was no line, and Papa's parking lot had 4 cars - at almost 10PM on a Saturday night!

Smallest percentage of gringos I've ever seen on a weekend. Selection was average, prices on the high side for initial offering, dropping fast after - not interested? then make nothing tonight. About 11:30 the army entered and did a room to room sweep of the door girls rooms, something I had never seen before.

Bottom line - TJ is so the number 1 now, it's not even funny.

Only thing going for NL now is the cheap liquor, proximity to the parking and that you can cross with 4 bottles versus 1 for California.

    Nlbt Fr

made speed run to bt saturday evening. business looked pretty slow; plenty of options and low amount of customers. policia presence very visible but all in all things were very low key and cool.

i saw a fr that stated they were searching private vehicles from us and mexico upon entry. this is cursory at best; i pulled up and policia shone flashlight into interior of my vehicle for about 3 seconds and then sent me on my way. a little note for those of you that do drive; the right lane you turn onto from anuhuac st. to get to the gate is blocked off for construction. i had to detour through an empty lot and, based upon the traffic using this route, i would say that in a week or less this route will not be usable for all the potholes and the ridge you have to climb over to get on the main street. you might know the town a bit better than i do but i will use taxis until i see construction is completed or the road is no longer blocked.

i trolled through once and saw little door activity and very few chicas beckoning customers to come inside the bars. several young ones outside danash but nothing that appealing. ended up with an older (30ish) one in marabu; great gfe w/dfk, bbbj, and offer for barebacking (which i didn't take her up on; i was living on the edge enough by driving). 40 minutes in the room, 1 shot, nice massage after, and on my way. total damages for fs ($50.00), drinks (3 rounds with tequila shooters for both - $30.00), and a $10.00 tip for the chica. rest of night spent drinking and talking world series with other mongers. too tired to spend anything else so left around 1:30.

The TJ cops stop you as the taxis let you off on the way back to the border. they changed the traffic flow a while back, and this makes it very conducive to shakedowns.

As mentioned, I getto BT about 2 or 3 times a year, although it has been almost a year since my last trip down. Hopefully some of you will be around next Saturday night.

Once you walk across bridge #1, I would imagine most of the pharmacies in that area, on the NL side, would sell viagra. Probably around 8 to 10 bucks per tab. That's a guess on my part.
On being hassled by the NL police, if you're caught with a viagra pill on you, they seem to make up the rules, as they try to extort money out of you. When they robbed me of $50, I had a couple of condoms in my pocket. They told me that was a "crime" to have condoms in my pocket. Like I say, they make up the rules as they go. If you're wearing blue jeans when they stop you, they may tell you wearing blue jeans is a crime. Pay up, or you go to jail.

There are lots of places to change money to pesos. Try to have fun in BT. I'm going to check it out myself, in a couple of weeks. And yes, I'll have some condoms in my pocket. I guess I'm just a "hardened criminal."

    Thumper,

Are you talking about Cali cops or Mexi cops shaking people down looking for the pills?

Great stuff guys! This is exactly why this board is so great. I'll be down next Saturday night, can't wait!

I was there on Friday night. Federal cops were at the gate searching private cars with Mex and Tex plates. Cabs were waved through. A lot more girls and customers than when I went a month or so ago. Both the cab driver and some of the girls I spoke with said that NL is much safer now. On the trips through town I'd see mini-convoys of military/cops with jeeps with machine guns mounted on them and all of the soldiers with big guns. There was some sort of checkpoint or something on Lopez de Laura when I was heading toward BT stopping cars in the opposite direction. It was gone by the time I headed back to the bridge.

In cabs, I always ask first, how much. Knowing full well it will be $10 to BT. If I have pesos, which is usually, I counter with "¿cien pesos?. Normally they say ok, once a guy said 110. Put a 500 and a 100 note in your pocket, tell him it's all you have. Then pay with a 500 peso note, make the bastard change it. If he can't then he'll have to take the 100.

Of the literally hundreds of transactions I've been involved in over the past couple of years in NL which were quoted in dollars, I've been denied the 10:1 rate only ONCE - and that was by a taxista (and I've only taken maybe 4 cab rides in that time since I virtually always drive). He quoted 10 dollars, and wanted 120 pesos. This was back when the actual rate was around 11.50.

Other than taxis (when you negotiate prior to entering the taxi) I would recommend NOT asking but simply handing them the money - by asking you are highlighting the fact that you are getting a deal and giving them a chance to reject. If you simply hand them the money they won't make a big deal about it. Back when the rate was 11.50, no girl ever blinked when I paid 10:1, even for $100 transactions at Danash where it made a real difference. Once in a blue moon, a girl will quote a different price up front. At all the clubs in NL for things such as drinks and room fees, the rate is always 10:1, versus in Tijuana where it is closer to the actual rate. So you should ALWAYS pay in pesos.

With curfew lifting, ae you seeing a decline in LE?

And since I'm shootin off questions, am I better with pesos like TJ or stick with dollars. What does the typical $10 taxi ride from the border come out as in pesos? A straight 100? That would be a bargain.
Post curfew, NLBT is now guarded by federal troups, don't know for how long it will be like this, but for now it is.

Pesos are better of course, when the exchange rate is over 10:1, most will accept the 10:1 rate, but always ask first. If quoted $10, ask if 100 pesos is cool, tell them it's all you have. Since $10 is a rip off anyway, 100 pesos will usually work. At 10.8:1, 100 pesos is like $9.25.

    Le ?

One of the biggest changes I noted in my post last week on trip to Tijuana was the very sharp decline in the amount of LE. A typical night in Tijuana saw the brown uniform, the blue pants with red stripe uniform, the plainclothes and the soldiers with assault rifles. Saturday night I saw 3 cops and they were just cruising.

During my last trip to Boys town I couldn't leave during a shut down that involved dozens of soldiers ( lousy position, lousy discipline, lousy deployment). Recent posts speak of all the other crap going on.
