90's when he was part of the death squads.

Unless the US government gets uppity and starts treating Colom like Chavez, thus backing
him into a corner and forcing him to seek aid elsewhere, he will steer towards the middle.

Colom should provide increased education and social services, which Guatemala
desparately needs. Currently many of the rural towns don't even have a school past
8th grade.

All my wealthy elite friends in Guatemala are scared to death that he will tax them a nickel
to build some schools. I think it is a good thing.

Guatemala has some hope. But we must remeber it remains the country for which the term
"banana republic" was coined.
