Yeah exactly. Presidents do not create jobs. If they are doing their jobs right, they are like refs in a football game. They cannot create a great game but they sure as hell can ruin it. Nixon put price controls on oil, supply cratered, and he fucked up the economy. Carter thought the answer was to wear sweaters and ration gasoline (seriously) and Reagan came in and got rid of the price controls and oil was cheap and plentiful for decades, and the economy zoomed. I do not think party affiliation had anything to do with anything, one president was smart and two were morons. Reagan really did not do anything. He just let the players play and made the game fair.

What I have seen now is Republicans are more honest than Dems. Here are quotes of someone I agree with:

Yes, he did things to produce and preside over what was then the deepest Great Repub Recession since the Great Repub Depression of the late 1920's / early 1930's, drove the unemployment rate into ten consecutive months of 10%+ figures and achieved a final annual average jobs creation record that pales in comparison to Carter, LBJ and Clinton, each of whom did the exact opposite of what Reagan did.

But you certainly made your point that presidents do indeed create or destroy jobs and can produce and preside over Great Recessions or avert and avoid them.

Far from being mere refs, Presidents are stewards of the economy. They propose what goes or does not go into budgets and legislation. They lay out full economic agendas.

Of course, it is then up to Congress to go with it or reject it. And history clearly shows when Repub presidents largely get their way, as Reagan did in his first year in office, what follows is economic disaster and all too often a Great Recession vs when Dem presidents largely get their way, as happened for FDR, LBJ, Clinton, Obama and even Biden so far, what follows is historic jobs creation, economic expansion and, guess what, no Great Recessions.

Presidents are faced with dozens of economic decisions on proposals and plans every day that can either lead to more jobs created and economic expansion for the country or to jobs destruction and economic contraction.

The actual historical data and record of results of at least the past 100 years show Dem presidents overwhelmingly choose to support and promote the former while Repub presidents, including Reagan, overwhelmingly choose to support and promote the latter.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll finds that over half of Americans (56%) support the Build Back Better Framework, but that support is primarily driven by Democrats. Eighty-three percent of Democrats support the plan, while only 28% of Republicans do. However, although support for the plan is split along party lines, individual components of the plan garner high support from all Americans. Expanding Medicare coverage gets the most support (80%), followed by imposing a 5% tax on incomes of over $10 million a year (70%), and universal preschool (69%). Investing in the immigration system (53%) and imposing a 15% minimum corporate tax (56%) are least supported, with the lack of support primarily from Republicans.
