Gangles makes an interesting point about looking for someone who wants to study a technical field. The gap between the courses most students here take and the needs of the labor market is the subject of a paper that I'm preparing now.

Nationwide, approximatetly 15% of Filipinos earn four year degrees, and most of the degrees are in "softer" subjects: HRM, Education, etc. However the higher growth sectors of the economy require engineers, IT specialists, accountants and, to a certain degree, pure science majors. One (of many) problems with the education system here is that graduating high school students receive little to no labor market information, and the choice of curricula is often driven by economic concerns. Thus, if Education is the cheapest course, and that's all the parents can afford, that's where the child will enroll. Remember too, that these kids are graduating from high school at age 16, and many go directly to college, and are thus not really mature enough to make any sort of informed career choice. As Gangles said, longer-range planning skills (how do I prepare myself for a job once I finish?) are not in the repertoire of most people, which further handicaps the decision-making process.

The education / labor market gap is wide and growing. Most graduating college students don't even speak English well enough to land jobs in call centers, and those jobs are abundant. However, the colleges cannot even provide adequate English language education, which explains why approximately 95% of all students taking the call center exams fail.

Companies are addressing the education problem. I seen done if the big bpo setup schools and offer training wages. I also do this in my company.

I like the way the country works even if it may look broke to others the level of the peso gives companies a chance to pay for training. The levels of payments means only companies with good budgets of good revenue will come here so the labour will not bubble. And I like the people here.

I fear that you will have wasted your time and effort, mate.
