The rules at the Mansion require that all chicas have a cedula. Also, there is a chica from one of the local clubs who I see on the down low because of her boyfriend issues. She was unwilling to come to the Mansion because she knew there would be lots of guys who also frequent the club and also potentially other chicas from the club around so she was wary of getting tattled on. Consequently, I did not get to see these 2 chicas like I originally wanted to.

The benefits of the Mansion more than made up for these negatives.

It was really nice to have some new running buddies in paradise, and while not everyone was great I met a few guys who were a lot of fun to hang out with. I think I hung out at San Diego with The Maestro just about every night. Good times.

I loved having a computer with internet connection (pretty fast too) right there in my room. I don't travel with a laptop so this helped me keep up with my email and whatnot very conveniently.

The friendliness of the staff is matched only by their attractiveness.

Being at the Mansion gives one the chance to meet lots of new chicas and even for someone who has as much in country experience as I do this is an excellent benefit.

I am headed back to Medellin at the end of the month. There were no rooms available for those days so they are letting me stay in Greg's room. Now thats what I call customer service!

48 hours with not response is typical of a Colombian run business though I believe the owner is not Colombian but the people running the day to day operations are, I believe. Boggles the mind how you can't get an answer as a customer who wants to give business but this is fairly typical here unfortunately.

It didn’t make it really easier for me but I have a small lean toward VIP so I sent them a request for room availabilities and have not yet received an answer (it has been 48 hrs). My vacation is only planed in March so I am in no hurry but if they do not answer soon then I will have to take my business elsewhere

You have very valid points concerning safety and ease of navigation but what I get from the reports is that VIP and MM will provide 'security' and 'advice for navigation'.
I never said that Medellin is more English friendly I just assumed that it would be better for a novice of Colombia because of 'all inclusive places'.

If you decide on Medellin, I only know the Mansion and the Castillo, but you will be fine, as I'm sure you would be in the other gringo hotels there.

Cartagena is also a must-do for all new guys to Colombia. Plenty of chicas from all over Colombia, somewhat of a beach scene, and good night-life every day of the week.

Medellin would be fine for a first timer, especially staying at place like the Mansion, Cartagena may be a bit easier to navigate about for a new guy though.

You may want to lurk moar. Your assumption that Medellin is english-friendly is way off, and could land you in some hot hot water. Cartagena is safe to walk around till 3am, and has chicas from all over the country (including quite a few paisas) Most people working in any tourist capacity (girls/touts/restaurants) will likely speak *some* english. Quite the opposite in MDE.

MM and VIP are both great, but unless you plan on spending the entire time joined at the hip with someone who can translate (this wouldn't be so bad if you find a hot girl that speaks english to do it) you might have a tough time getting around in Medellin.

One thing is for sure as soon as I learn minimal Spanish I will try Cartagena.

Cartagena is much easier to navigate than Medellin without Spanish. And Cartagena is much more safe as well.
