Wages for most people in Dom Rep are low. Even for service oriented jobs like a maid, the wages are higher here in the United States. Many Domnicans would like to visit Puerto Rico or the United States, but they can't visit without a Visa. To get a Visa to visit the US is not easy.

Rich Dominicans can get Visas and they can travel where they want. The majority of Dominicans are not rich.

In Santiago, especially on calle del sol, they have ATMs that you can just swipe in and swipe out! I would suggest to use only those, unless you are withdrawing from another bank during regular banking hours. A good idea is to open a "passbook" savings account in US dollars and a dominican pesos card account at one of the local banks and you can transfer money between accounts online, but still have your dollar account SAFE!! I've used Banco Santa Cruz.

You should also consider getting a cedular(residency). Believe me it will protect you!!

To get a VISA to visit the US, for a Dominican is not easy. Poor Dominicans 99.999% will not a get VISA. Dominicans with green cards, will work and make money in the States and they will return for vacations in Dom Rep. There are many Dominicans in new york city, to me they are the majority of the latino population in New York City. Some Dominicans move to Spain, I don't what the VISA requirements are, for Dominicans who visit Spain.

You can easily get a two bedroom apartment in Tamboril or Licey Al Medio for about US$150 a month and you will be about 10 to 15 minutes from the monument.

About meals?? I would have two pieces of fruit and OJ or a bowl of oatmeal.(very cheap) and then at lunch I would go to one of the numerous cafeteria's and have lunch(rice & beans, chicken, salad) for at least RD$100. At night I would make sandwiches. I would also buy whatever beer is on sale, like Brahma. Also, when I did go out usually to Tipicos or Colmados, I will order a bottle of Brugal & Coke for about $RD160. Good times!

To add, you should buy a motorbike, like the ones used by motoconchos(yamaha or chinese models) they will be cheap to buy and cheap to fix and easy to sell. You can get a real good used one for about $600US.

Hi yes I am here in the slime pits of hell Lima Peru. I still can't wait until I finally get to the Dr if its not early in the winter this year then next year late in the winter-spring should be for sure. I was just thinking of Dr as I am in Lima now when the cold mist of autumn and winter are here. At least in the Dr everything is warm or hot. I really hope nothing drastic happens if the dollar collapses and in comes the Amero. It also seems the Euro is ready to fall too. This stuff rally has me worrying. Look at what happened to Iceland and Greece too.

Ok well if anyone can update on this again cool. I am trying for this year but if not like I said early next year I should be in The Dr.

No one can really answer that question. If the dollar and Euro will rise and fall is playing the FX game and many pros can't do it successfully. Buy gold??

Anyway, if you are living in the DR, then you will be living on the pesos, when it comes down to household expenses and dominican products. Like Jaosousa stated the dollar/pesos has been very stable because I remember when back in 2003 when Polito was President and the major dominican banks had huge problemas, the rate was like 50 to 1 and when Leonel came to office in 2004 the pesos free falled to about 24 to 1 by christmas 2004. Of course that directly affect Dominican prices for goods.

So far, the DR had a major election, no biggie, and Leonel has another 2 years in office. Also, I am not hearing anything with the major banks in the country. If the above is not enough then I recommend you send a question to "Dominicans on Wall Street" http://dows.ws/dowssite/
