Not new to China, but new to Shanghai.

Up until now, I have never paid more than 100rmb for a hair salon girl in any city or town (Beijing, Qingdao, Chengdu, etc.).

Their wham-bam style of service suites me just fine, and occasionally I have found young, unearthed gems who are terrific despite their circumstances.

I have recently relocated to Shanghai for the very first time, but am finding it is an entirely different beast here than out in the provinces.

I presume that the abundance of wealthy European bankers has something to do with the exorbitant prices the escorts here are asking.

I refuse to pay these prices, and instead would like to find a hair salon street that caters to migrant workers and poorer locals.

I have prowled around the central train station, but there's nothing here.

So I guess the cheap hair salon girls are hidden somewhere else in the backstreets of Shanghai.

European Banksters are too busy dealing with the pros working whatever remains of Tongren road. They are playing in a league that doesn't even recognize the existence of barbershops.

Standard FS price for Shanghai is 150. It's been 150 for ages. Good customer discount might drop that to 130. Which isn't to say you won't get action for 100 but that is hardly the normal case. Usually you'll be WAY out someplace a laowai, let alone a mongering one, stands out like a turban in The Vatican. Or you'll be enjoying the company of a woman old enough to be the mother of the type you'd rather hire.

The central rail station hasn't been a place to find action since 2010 or so. Years ago there used to be loads of working girl-huts in the urban core. There might still be lone holdouts inside the inner ring but I wouldn't count on it. These days you'll need to get out past the 2nd ring before you start seeing clusters of them. Over the years all the ones in my neighborhood that closed down were shuttered due to rising property costs or general development and not due to direct police action. There comes a point where general overhead means you can't get away with charging 150. And you want to charge much more than 200 per punter you start getting into the mini-sauna* price range, where you get a private room with a shower for only a bit more than a "high end" whack shack (they do exist!).

There was a proper map done by a guy who spent nearly 2 years covering pretty much ALL of Shanghai with a hand-held GPS mapper trying get a definitive BBS count, from Jinshan to Jiading, from the Pacific to the border with Jiangsu. Someone posted a partial list of his work a few years back. I've seen the complete map but never had access to the raw data behind it.

Anyhow- long story short you can still find minibrothels in Shanghai. But you want affordable sex? Look for places with cheap storefront space. That is going to exclude anywhere that doesn't require a taxi to reach / or is a good walk from any metro station these days. The northeastern corner of Shui Qing road and Li'an road, just west of the S20 is an example. The closest I've been there is in my car while stopped at the intersection, perhaps another member can make the drive out there to report on the service and pricing.

*Mini-sauna = establishment without the fishbowl. Just a hallway lineup, small collection of decently decorated rooms with private showers, expect to pay 300-400.

Cheap sex can be had in Dalian, China for only 50 RMB. This price will get you a streetwalker in her 30s or 40s. This price is for short-term only, but it includes the room (you don't need to pay any extra for the room or any other "fees" for that matter). Sometimes the women around this area will give you head before the "main course," and sometimes they won't. The location is at the Wuyi Lu and Xi'an Lu intersection (take a look at Google Maps for directions). If you need to take a taxi to this area, just tell the taxi driver "Jiefang Guangchang." However, given the still scaled down economy with mean incomes still under a few thousand per year, the price for sex (for Chinese men) is high compared to other countries. Your post nicely summarizes the reasons: High male / female ratio increasing demand and therefore price and number of women willing to partake in industry; illegality further causing price to increase due to risk that girls take in this profession; social acceptability to many Chinese despite illegality which allow girls to participate in the industry without having to keep their participation secret from family and friends.

Though I have not met any girls in China who told me their husbands know they do this work, I have met country girls in the city whose families back home know and approve. This would be far less likely to occur for poor farm girls in other countries. There is a historical context to this. During the past empires, especially the Tang and Song, it was a great honor for a country girl to be chosen to join the emperor's harem of say 1200 concubines or even a nobleman's harem of say 30 concubines. It should not be surprising that today a young lady leaving the village a pauper and returning dressed elegantly and with money to spend all earned from the relatively rich in city barber shops and saunas is happily accepted.

In New Zealand, prostitution is legal and this has meant reasonable prices, better control of STDs, and allows the tax man to get his cut, which is fair I think. The girls are able to openly talk to their GP about staying healthy and there is more control of location and cleanliness of the brothels. The girls are safer, because they can call police if there is a threat of violence. Etc. Etc.

More and more WGs are going to NZ from Asia, although this is not always easy. The quality is very good, and at a good price.

I believe that these are the reasons that quality service seems so difficult to find in China, particularly for western guys, who may shy away from some areas and venues because of the fear factor. I lived in Shenzhen a long time. It was a perfect little town where the girls came from provinces and eager to be with a foreigner. By their estimate foreigner means rich Chinese who came from Hong Kong.

Most Hk Chinese had kept young Gf and came once in a while. Since the HK people were very picky they would select mostly pretty girls only.

Rest of the girls who came to Shenzhen ended up in restaurents, massage parlors, KTV etc. As Shenzhen bloomed there were many opportunities for these girls. Ofcourse prostituition flourished as well because.
