Does anybody know why KTVs are so expensive in China? Is it because they have to pay massive amounts to the police or mafia in bribes? They charge you at least 800 or so, normal price is probably 1300 for an evening, for what? A couple of beers, some crackers, a girl to talk to for a couple of hours? And the girl only gets 100-200 if she doesn't go with you at the end of the evening.

Yes, the sex is cheap in Southern China. I spent 4 months in China in 2006. On my way through customs at Guangzhou, I decided to get sick. I got an 11 day extension on my flight to New York. After dealing with the lovely ladys and paying them, several will take a long tome to look at the cash. I assumed that they are looking for fake bills. I always get cash from ATMs so I assume they are ligit. How can you tell if the money you get as change is real? Is it obvious?

There are several ways to check if a note is real. The safest way is to use a blue light (attach a tiny one to your keyring) and shine it over the face. A hidden '100' (or whatever denomination) will appear. This even works with new 1RMB notes! Also tiny random hairs through the note will glow.

If you cant get one of these blue lights then here are some other methods:

* the raised metallic green '100' will change colour when you move the bill by changing the angle of the face as you are looking at it (some store cashiers used to use this method)
* run your fingernail down Mao's shirt and you will feel the raised lines printed on the note
* hold the bill up to the light. the semicircular shapes on either side will align. a watermark of Mao will also appear (the fakes have the watermark printed on the surface)
* if you are a pro, you can tell just by the feel of the paper or the 'snap' the note makes when you pull on the sides quickly.

There are even more checks, but if your bill passes several or all of these mentioned above then I guarantee its real. Especially with the blue light test!
