I awoke late night here on the US West Coast. Decided to do some more work and check evening mail. It is a good place but quite "Asian" in the sense of being packed, loud and not remotely close to a fine dining experience. You can for example point at the fish, shrimp or lobster you wish to consume, or pick a sizzling chicken from the menu. I am a sea food addict and eat there once or twice every trip.

In Davao I used to rate it one of my favourite places. Now I had a few meals to many there but still consider it one of the better 10-12 places to eat in Davao.

I finally got to reading an e-mail forwarded by GoodEnough. It is an internet article by a filipina living in Singapore who is some sort of Food Critic. She visited Davao and stayed at some hotel, most likely the Marco Polo. Mentions a "highly recommended" chinese restaurant here called "Ah Fat" (yes, you heard it correctly). What the fuck kind of a name is this! In any event even the Hotel Concierge said it was a "must try", as well as, the guy at the car rental place. Ya right!

I never heard of this place. Most likely it is over on Torres St where there is a long line of chinese and filipino restaurants. I dined at one of them that a taxi driver took us to a couple years ago. It was not very good and so I did not return. I read of one restaurant there in an article in the Cebu Pacific "In Flight" magazine that has been around since the early 80's and is also a "must see". I have never been to it.

To be honest, when I was first coming to Davao City I visited many restaurants that filipinas living here took me to for lunch or dinner. Mostly they were filipino barbecue places. All were pretty terrible and the atmosphere was conducive to transients, street denizens and the like. Back then I was staying at Casa Leticia which has, beyond a doubt, the worst food of any restaurant inside a Hotel anywhere in the world.Not even close to edible. END OF STORY!

So, back then I avoided room service for fear of food poisoning and drank only coffee from the "inclusive" morning breakfast. They covered the fried or poached eggs with vinegar, making them rancit. Most of the foods came directly out of a can, onto the frying pan and then to your plate. DISGUSTING. I had to constantly look for places to dine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I found quickly as I did elsewhere in the Philippines that relying on a filipina to locate a decent restaurant was about as likely as having her locate a $ 1,000 US to spend. Same with asking any filipinos I came in contact with back then. They knew only of cheap places serving cheap, poor quality filipino foods that are best avoided if you desire to stay healthy.

It was not until I located O'Flanagan's (now gone, sadly), De Bonte Koe, Cafe de Ville, La Toscana and the 3rd floor chinese restaurant and lobby restaurant at the Marco Polo that I found edible food in Davao City. Now there is also Farfalla's out towards Lanang. Also the Plaza Bistro on the fourth floor of the Marco Polo and "Entree" inside Apoview Hotel which is also very good and gets a "hands down" A for ambiance (nice, intimate booths, candlelight, quiet music, a view of japanese gardens where you can also dine and an attentive but not over bearing staff).

I cannot think of anyplace else that is worth eating. Swiss Deli is only adequate. If not for GE liking this place for lunch, I would never go inside except to buy french red wines (best prices in davao) and the fresh baked bread and nice cheeses/desserts. The filipino barbecue restaurants (5 or 6 there now) located around the area of Ground Zero (J Camus & Illustre Sts corner) are good for bringing filipinas to eat late at night or for finding pussy late at night. Have a beer or soft drink here but avoid the food which is layered in salt (last thing your heart needs).

At 11:30Pm back in July 2008 I took May and her four roommates from Ateneo University here as they complained of being hungry (like it was my fucking problem). I nursed a beer as the five "gremlins" devoured barbecue pork. Cost to me was 550 pesos. The place was clean and okay. I left to sleep at 12:30AM and they were still there eating and talking in vasyan like I was just a "big wallet" at their table. The little assholes did not even say thankyou to me as I left. Red Knight Garden can be a fun Place to stay here in Davao City. It is not a place for me due to lack of privacy, too many old farts wanting to know your "every personal detail" and generally no where but in your room where you can go to be alone. I don't want to belabor this point, but it might be instructive to others who are contemplating coming here. If you're used to five start luxury hotels, and if this is the standard at which you feel most comfortable, then the Marco Polo is only real alternative for you. If you're willing to settle for slightly less (but only slightly), then the Apo View becomes a viable choice. There are guys I know who like the Grand Regal, but it's too far out and too shabby for real consideration in my opinion.

A couple things that might prove useful. But first, if you do go to Chardon's Tailors and get a quote for anything, DO get it in writing and KEEP THE RECEIPT. I am now, via phone, being quoted P4,500 more for the suit I had made since leaving Davao City. I'm glad you posted this update on Chardon's. I made it into Davao City, but decided to call first. Brian, the guy that answered the phone, quoted me P850 to alter my slacks (waist & thighs) and P4000 for my jacket (take in sides). I figured I would just buy new suits for that price. I did stay at the Red Knight. It is "ok" to "good" for sex, but for family, personally, the others with me did not appreciate the ants in the kitchen, bathroom, and living room. I booked a larger unit online, but upon arrival the manager claimed someone spoke with me and I said it was ok. Spend one or two days in the smaller unit, then move in a day or two. If you want to dine on delicious ostrich meat or Kangaroo meat, Henny serves both in his De Bonte Koe Restaurant on Rizal Street, behind Chico's, in the courtyard of Haban Compound. Ostrich is P425 and kagaroo is P750, both with bread, baked potato and vegetables. Delicious!

I purchased my two kilos of ostrich at the Crocodile Farm out near the airport. I think it was P 1,900 for two kilos. They also sell crocidile meat there. Henny gets his ostrich from the Ostrich Farm which is outside Davao City. You can take a trip there for a morning or afternoon. Easier to but it at the crocodile Farm which is a 30 minute, 65 pesos taxi ride from either the Marco Polo or Apo View Hotels. If you have a lady with children or children of your own this is a great place.

The admission is about 100 peso per person and it is all in a giant circle. You can bring the children here and they will see verything in an hour and you can relax and enjoy the day. I took my Son, Daniel, and his mother here twice. He says he like Davao ONLY for the Crocodile Farm. The Gift Shop and the stall selling Ostrich Meat and Crocodile Meat is near the Exit. On the way out you can buy it frozen and you simply grill it like a beef steak.

Next to the Crocodile Farm is the Butterfly Farm. Again, a second Trip can be to this Place with children. Your Lady will appreciate this and you will surely get a great "thankyou" blowjob and fuck for your efforts. I intend to bring my infant Son, Conor here next Trip as he will be old enough to have fun. We can bring him in a stroller and the ostrich come right up to the fence making viewing, close-up, easy.
