    Smoking Question

Hi folks! Long time lurker, first time poster. I have Costa Rica, Thailand, Mexico, and some Islands under my belt. Now looking at Medellin. I am a smoker (I know not good for me). I have looked at various apartments, and hotels recommended on this site and others. It seems most of the better places to stay frown upon smoking. I do like to lay in bed after sex and have a smoke, because I don't eat jelly beans (old Redd Foxx joke). Any recommendations other than not smoking?

    Thank you!

    Hotel Parque La 70

I don't know of any nice hotels downtown, though there may be some. Just a couple of metro stops away (and there is a metro right near the Hotel Nutibara) is Hotel Parque 70 Medellin.

    https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer...VUTvs&hl=en_US

It's actually in the area near the stadium called La 70, again very near the Metro stop El Estadio. I loved this place, and the night life there is great.

You can stay at a 4 or 5 star boutique hotel with that price range. I'm assuming that's $75 - 100 a night, which is cheap for hotels and I've found Colombia overall (CTG being the exception) cheap for nice hotels. Your risk is only that at nicer hotels, you might face an issue with bringing back a chica (you can bring her back, but you might get charged.) This is really a hit or miss, always register a room for 2 people (assuming it's you and want a chica to join you) and mention to the check-in desk that your girlfriend will join you shortly (if you are by yourself). You'll be fine getting the first girl in, and they'll register at the front desk with their cedula / passport. Now if you bring back another girl, you'll probably face a problem but if your hotel has a nice large lobby, is busy, and you can walk to the elevators discreetly then you may not face a problem at all. Or you can avoid all this by renting an apartment or staying at the Mansion. It's your first time, and the latter is highly recommended if you don't speak spanish very well.

    Budget apartment Laureles

I stayed for a few nights at a place that has been mentioned before.

    http://tuapartamentomde.com/pricing.html

And I thought I'd give a few more details. On the website, they list two locations, one in Laureles and a slightly cheaper one in barrio Buenos Aires (a large, middle class neighborhood west of downtown, roughly as far from Centro as Laureles is.) I was interested in checking out the one in BA, but they wouldn't let me. They implied it's more of a hotel than apartment, but otherwise wouldn't give much info. And I prefer the private access, no doorman / receptionist, in the Laureles building.

I stayed at the Laureles location, but never got to talk to the owner (except briefly by phone.) It's right next to the Nutibara restaurant strip, on a quieter side street. I had 1 bedroom apartment (not a studio) for 60 K per night. It was clean, well-furnished, good kitchen, wifi. No hot water. The windows went into the hallway and the interior of the building (an outdoor corridor), so not a lot of sunlight or ventilation. It was fine for a few days, but I would have wanted a room with street-facing windows for longer term. I paid the cleaning lady for the room (she wrote up an impromptu contract on a blank piece of paper for me to sign) and she didn't know anything about monthly prices or other room availability, and like I said I didn't meet the boss.

I had a few girls over for afternoon visits, and while the cleaning lady saw me walking with them and seemed embarrassed, it was never mentioned.

56 k and change. There are a few cheaper a block or two down the street but it starts getting into the local bar scene. More noise.

    Poblado

I made my way over to the poblado area. Looks interesting. Will go back later when bars open up. Waiting to hear from someone I met on the plane that has been here a few times. Will check out casas or clubs later.

FYI. Hotel Central Plaza was $18 roughly for a double bed. Small but sufficent. 8 k to Calle 10 in Poblado by taxi.

I am assuming the hard rock is a waste of time?

Went by the old mansion. Not too friendly and would not let me look inside. Referred me to the web.

I sent a message to Aussie Greg thinking about staying there but have gotten no response.

I sent a message to Aussie Greg thinking about staying there but have gotten no response. Not sure how else to contact him. Looks like the vip place might be similar. For a first trip I want to keep it simple. I have been to Cartagena and Santa Marta so I am used to Colombia a little.

    Thanks in advance.

P.S. I have RTF but the gringo bars / hotel combo is a bit more complex.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
How about telling us what happened?
