I was in HCMC about 10 years ago for a year, and now I'm finally back. Some things have changed, some haven't. I've tried RTFF but haven't found a discussion of safeguarding your wallet, phone, watch, etc. I recall that many establishments gave you a plastic bag to carry your stuff around with, even in the shower, while others provided keyed lockers, which always made me a little nervous (my read was that they wanted to control the flow of tip money, and hotels wanted to appear classy). In the larger, more commercial hotels, such as the A25 Chain, you will find electronic safes in the room. For the smaller, and possibly family run hotels, I used a small, portable travel and relatively lite weight safety box with a cable that could be wrapped / secured around a bed frame. You can buy them on the internet for around $20 US. However, for day carry, I used a lite weight fabric money belt large enough for my passport and monies. At no time in Saigon did I feel unsafe in District 1, the tourist area. Even when I went to massage parlors for Foot / Dick massages and had to disrobe and putting my nasty drawers in a basket, I always found any monies left in my pockets still there. This is not to say that there are not pickpockets and motorbike thieves. So, always carry your passport in a moneybelt along with your big money.
