It's your first trip in Thailand and you've learned all this in 9* nights in Bkk.

You might know more on the mongering scene in Bkk than I do after going there for years (I've never put a foot in Thermae for example).

I'm curious, for how long have you been reading the forum before going there?

I love it when folks are practical. Good post. Let me follow up with:

The stairs: One of the key things is to use the building escalators when possible. There is one at the Sheraton by the Thermae to get you over to Soi 8.

The best thing to say to the touts is May Kap, Khapkhun kap. Practice your pronunciation so it sounds like you speak Thai. If the touts think you speak Thai, they will leave you alone. I actually speak some very limited Thai, but my accent is good. So they think I speak it.

Immodium is a drug of last resort. At the first sign of the squeeges, start with Pepto. There is no chewable or liquid here, just pills. If the pepto doesn't stop it, guess you are hanging in the room for a while. Only if it continues after say 12 hours should you do Immodium. You want to get those bad bugs out so enjoy the flow. If you have to travel like on a train, plane or bus, then you have no choice, but I avoid immodium (even though I carry two pills in my wallet) until I am completely emptied.

For the touts, I can speak Thai correctly and I always completely ignore these guys without talking a word with them and they get the message pretty quickly (but it works because I just pass by and I know where I'm going).

For the immodium I also take it only on last resort if I have to take strong antibiotics with it. I mostly use the active charcoal, it cleans the inside quite effectively after a few days and you can find it in 7-11's (but it doesn't work if you're infected by a bad bactery).

Lately I've found a small bottle that contains a combination of essential oils that is very useful to take wherever I travel.

Soi 4: Plenty of "tourists" on a tourist visa will freelance here, which makes for an interesting variation. - Looks-wise, good selection, though low baseline. It was not difficult to find an acceptable looking hotel guest. Peak hours were around 9-11. The better looking girls will leave earlier. "Closing hours" is around 3-4. - Prices range from 1000-2000. Many of the girls have their own rooms on the street. If using theirs, ask if there's a room fee. - Service levels were generally better than Thermae, and was sometimes outstanding. But w hat sets it apart from Oilies and even Thermae is that girls here are generally more interesting, fun to talk to, and open to strangers. - There were two main groups of foreigners. Vietnamese -- slightly more attractive faces. However, much worse bodies.

That is my impression of the Viet girls, too. Also, lately I have sat for extended periods with friends at the outdoor ground level bar right behind where most of those Viet girls stand on Soi 4 in front of Hillary 1. And, at least when I was watching, all but the 1-2 very best looking ones will stand there on otherwise busy nights without bagging a customer for hours.

And they were really trying, too, not just standing there like statues. They were reaching out, blocking the path of customers of all colors and ethnic groups, yep including dark skin Indians alone, in pairs or three, without much success.

At least 3 times over a couple of different nights, a better looking one or two of the Viet girls would rope in a young, slim Asian tourist, engage in some kind of negotiation for several minutes, the guy (different one every time) would smile, move on and be seen minutes later strolling with an obvious ladyboy into the alley across Soi 4 where Di Place and other short time hotels are located.

A first trip to Thailand, with 9 nights in BKK. The main takeaways are as follows.

1. It is a mistake for first-time visitors to book too far in advance. 3-4 nights would be recommended. The goal of the first few nights is to find out what area of the city is best suited to one's preferences. A hotel near Nana station is a safe choice. This is within walking distance of Nana plaza, soi 4, and Thermae. Oilies are 20 minutes by train or 30 minutes by foot. Soapies 40-50 minutes by train.

2. Condoms are mostly 52 mm and some 54 mm. This corresponds to average and a bit below.

3. KY / lube is recommended to avoid breakage. This can be purchased at most pharmacies.

4. Venue recommendations on either ISG or misc Thailand sites were hit / miss. Don't plan around them.

5. It seems advisable to avoid any venue or service whose employees aggressively solicit passerby. If one is restrained or harassed, saying "No" is more effective than trying to walk away..

Never pay attention to Venue recommendations and girl recommendations. Thats all subjective, and frequently built on fantasy.

Another note for newbies: Know your cab fares. Its easy. Just use Google maps and count the klicks. Basically its 37 for the drop to 2 km and then variable up to 3. 5 baht per km depending on traffic. If you know the fare in your head, then its easier to get a cab out of the district at night. Thus, I know that the fare to my condo is just about 100 baht from Mixx, so when they start touting me for 300 baht, 200 baht, I just keep chanting 100 baht until someone gives in and if none will, Ill just flag down a moving cab. Keep in mind that tourist numbers are flat so you are in the bargaining seat.

9. Be careful with food / drinks. An upset stomach can easily ruin a day.

Always carry Immodium when you travel. I learned this from another ISG member when I got extremely sick in PP. After an hour I was ready to hit the Riverside bars again.

Impressions of venues.

Thermae: A talked-about place for a reason. It's interesting. During peak hours the atmosphere is touristy, almost family-friendly. And, perhaps appropriately, it does give off the impression of being a tourist trap. One simulates picking up a girl in a foreign country and bedding her. - It is true what's been said about girls here being less experienced. Most of them give the impression of the girl-next-door type. However, this does not mean that they are sweeter or more innocent. Most of them are colder or as cold as the masseuses, and more calculating. They are worse in bed without making up for it in other ways. Do not equate inexperience with GF experience. Some of them are girlish and playful, yes, just not in bed. - It is false that girls are better looking at the cafe. Few were worth approaching. Many of the girls looked worse up close. It may have something to do with the makeup they use, but wrinkles and crows-feet were common. There was no difference between the left / right side. Girls seem to stand with their friends. - Prices range from 2500-3000. It's possible to talk some down to 2000 but not all. Peak hours were 10-12. Most girls seemed to work around 9-12. It opened at 8.

Oilies: There was not a large difference between the larger and smaller oilies. Price corresponded to better rooms but not better service or a better selection of masseuses. The smaller, cheaper parlors were preferable to me. - For all of them, service was generally acceptable to great. It was not difficult to find an adequate-looking masseuse. A plus is that many of the employees sit outside, so one is able to view them under natural lighting. - There are two main side-streets for oilies. One of them is soi 24/1, across the street from Snow White on google maps. The other is the street off soi 24, around Addict on google maps. Both of these side-streets will have 5+ parlors in close proximity. There are a few other parlors scattered around the area like Dozo, Ore, Thanks, Doki-doki if one doesn't mind a walk. But it seems advisable to focus on these two streets to begin with. - Many of the parlors will have wall mirrors, even the small ones. None that I found had a ceiling mirror.

Soapies: Located far away and comparatively expensive. The mamasan will expect a tip. In terms of looks, the base standard was higher than the oilies, and this translates to a theoretically larger selection. None, however, were that impressive. I only went once, because getting there by subway was not worth the effort.

8. Sukhumvit is a wide busy street. It is mainly crossed using walkways (reached with stairs). This is good to keep in mind when booking and arriving at one's hotel.

If her boyfriend worked at 7-11, he would be the most respectable boyfriend any of those girls ever had. 99% of the time, the boyfriend has no job at all and just relies on the girlfriend to give him money.

I was truly astounded the last time I was at the Grace Hotel about a year ago. It was truly a shell of its former self. Inside in the open seating area, it used to be pretty full of women. The last time I was there, there were no more than about 15 women at max around. A very small selection. Outside there were some women dressed in full burka which kind of hand me curious, but I decided to pass. From the sounds of the last poster, it sounds like things are still pretty slow at the Grace which is sad because it used to be a great place to sit in AC comfort and watch girls pass by back and forth.

I found my self nearby so I thought I would take a look. There were about a dozen girls outside the hotel and maybe another 30 in the lobby. Towards your right is a large seating area where they are just sitting there. There is a bar with a few more. I spoke to one who was from Uzbek. Most of the girls were from this part of the world. She was taking this piss and wanted 3000 for short time and 9000 for long time. No chance! None of the girl were attractive and chubby.

These types of girls can be found in Dubai (Deira). On the way out, I saw an Indian girl. She wanted 2000 for ST. She was average so I move on. She asked me to counter but I declined. I think she would have accepted 1500. I got a chicken shawarma nearby and left. There is some good middle eastern food in this area. This quality of girls was disappointing.

She left at 7 as she had a morning class. Forgot to mention she was just 23. She surely would have stayed over till lunch but for her class. She was a very sweet and genuine gal.

Yeah, the girl makes a lot of bucks at 23 by fucking strangers all night and day, she parties all night long and is being paid everything by her customer during that night out but still wakes up at 7 because of a morning class. That sounds right.

And you were such a great company that she would surely have stayed with you until lunch if ever there wasn't that fucking morning class, OK.
