So I've been to Bangkok twice and both times I went here based on reports. Unfortunately, both times I didn't have a very good experience. The first time I got two girls. Really? I heard the reason Thai TV shows will often have Thai subtitles even though the actors are all speaking Thai is because there are so many different regional Thai dialects, some regions might have trouble understanding what the actors are saying and they need subtitles. Like a thick Cockney dialect in London.

Are the vowels not a factor from region to region in Thailand?

It's just for ease and also the fact that on some shows the characters may not be speaking Thai but a regional dialect that Bangkokers maybe wouldn't fully understand. They also use the subtitles to render what's being said with correct grammar. Important for on site news interview situations where locals speaking may not care to follow or don't know how to use proper grammar. Pronunciation (including vowels) and word usage here varies region to region just like any other country but the subtitles are mainly for the reasons above.

Ha ha. An English guy corrected my pronunciation of it too, after he did not recognise the word at all. Seems I pronounce it in the way similar to Indian, Sri Lankan, and West Indies and European way, where English and Americans may pronounce the letter A another way (as in can). For Thai way, it becomes like "ganchar".

English is supposed to be tolerant of different ways to pronounce vowels depending where you come from. Thai is not. Vowels sounds in Thai have to be correct.

Some words have accepted variants and others don't. Even in Thai there are words where the vowel sound may be changed, shortened or altered depending on the speaker / region but is still understood by a native speaker with ease in most cases. As far as this word, I think the "G" was the issue. Spelling it as Ganga will throw anyone off. Most places worldwide including in America it's pronounced ganja and the a doesn't rhyme with can, just like in the original Hindi / Sanskrit form. Those who say it in a way that rhymes with "can" are chiefly English or just trying to be comedic.

I live very near there and walk through several nights a week. No, there is no action, but some ok food, cheap beer, and an amazing amount of eye candy.
