I actually preferred it 20 years ago. It was far less posh and still had a bit of an edge to it. And for that matter you could eat at the best restaurants in town for literally peanuts. Le Normandie had specials during low season where you could have a three course lunch for 999 Baht and the exchange rate at the time was 44 to 1. Never spent more than 25 USD for amazing food at the cities great restaurants. As it has become more comfortable and convenient, more people have come and the prices have skyrocketed, but in my opinion the quality has not.
Of course I loved Cambodia in late 90s early 00s. Very cool place. And the perceived danger kept most away.
I find BKK even more noisy now with all the big bikes and the aftermarket pipes they put on.

In those days, 20-25 years ago, I couldn't get out of Bangkok and to Pattaya fast enough. Some people say it is still smoggy here. But I can't say it bothers me like it did back then. You could see the putrid exhaust jetting out of every vehicle, especially the motorbikes, and filling the streets with putrid fumes like San Francisco fog. The noise was deafening and unrelenting. Traffic would come to a standstill and, other than riding motorbike taxis through all that exhaust, you were going be stuck in it with no alternatve. They would have had to offer me fantastic deals on hotel rooms and food just to keep me there more nights than necessary on late arrival or to catch my flights.

And, honestly, I don't recall Soi Cowboy, Nana or Patpong offering such great sexually rewarding experiences at then bargain prices. Instead, I remember having to be much more wary of rip-offs and bait and switch scams than I needed to be in Pattaya. And that the sex overall in Thailand was not nearly as good as in the Philippines.

I usually spent about half of my vacation time in Thailand and half in the Philippines because I wanted to experience both after traveling so far to get to this part of the world. And because the infrastructure was better in Thailand then as now. But when it came to the women, I always kind of missed the Philippines when I was in Thailand but never missed Thailand when I was in the Philippines. LOL.

When it came time to retire in one place or another, Thailand's superior infrastructure and lower crime rate won out. And I fully intended to take 2-3 week trips to the Philippines to get my sweeter, more loving Filippina sex fix every six months or so. But do you know I have not taken one trip to the Philippines for that fix in the 5+ years I have lived in Bangkok?

It turns out all of the sweeter and more loving feeling I thought I would be missing in Bkk as I missed it 20-25 years ago can be had right here these days. Right along with the more strictly mercenary sex for cash transactions, of course. So I have not felt the need to go outside of Bkk for anything of a sexual nature. Have honestly not had time or a break in the rewarding action long enough to feel a need for it.

And in terms of living conditions, wow, Bangkok is a much more comfortable and convenient place to be now than 20-25 years ago thanks to the MRT, BTS and since noise abatement and anti-exhaust laws were passed regarding motorcycles, buses, cars and trucks.

Please name the places that are better overall. I still think Thailand beats every other place on earth when your top consideration is easy access to young girls and an overall nice environment. And yes, even still relatively cheap.

Yes, Thailand was better 20 years ago, but I still think it's the number one spot for mongers to not only visit, but to live. And I travel a lot, so I am curious which other nation(s) you consider better these days. I sure haven't seen them.

I'd probably look at some places in Europe (Portugal, Greece, some Eastern nations) or South America. Actually Malaysia has a very nice visa program, Malaysia my 2nd Home, and plenty of gals.

His other big complaint was there were no stunners or girls worth the time and money among the freelancers in the usual clubs and bars the night before, apparently unaware of the fact that New Year's week to Thai people re being with their families is like Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Thanksgiving, New Years Eve and New Years Day to USA people all rolled into one week. The more financially successful freelancers are not working this week. Stretches of Sukhumvit look like a ghost town even tonight, January 3rd. Very few street vendors. Many restaurants are closed until the 6th of January.

For me, Thailand is much better now than when I was monger vacationing here 20-25 years ago. The two biggest improvements, for me again that is, is that 20-25 years ago was the height of the HIV hysteria condom mania regarding a predicted heterosexual transmission epidemic that never happened and there were no smartphones with fast if highly imperfect translation apps and social networks. I was no more capable of finishing while wearing a condom then than now, so convincing a girl to go bareback during that era, particularly with a serious language barrier, was a major hurdle every time. Can't say how things were 10 years ago since I took about a decade long break from vacationing in Asia until I moved here about 5 years ago. Maybe that was a sweet spot time to monger here, don't know.

I'm glad you are enjoying yourself. Why am I here? I've lived here for almost 20 years; it's home. Many of us are quite ensconced here and it would be difficult to leave; jobs, businesses, significant others, etc. But would I choose it now? Probably not and that is not just based on the P4P scene, which in BKK has become quite meh at best. There are other nations that are far more accommodating to expats, have more benefits for long-term residents, and have a much easier path to citizenship.

Lots of exception really.
