Never understood why people take cars in one of the most congested cities in the world. MRT and skytrains

Wasn't sure where else to put this, so here goes. Any suggestions as to where to spend a month or so that are not named Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket? Chiang Mai is one of my favourite cities, but it's overrun with fit young guys, so unless you're decent at picking up girls in farang land, you'll have a lot of probably unwanted competition as far as uni-girls go.
