There's for some unknown reason fairly good advertising and touting for Pattaya as some sorta beach town close to Bangkok and they advertise it to families and such, as an alternative to the islands that is easier and cheaper. I suspect many chinese and indian family tourists don't really understand what's happening.

As an Indian, I can confirm that it is true. Pattaya is indeed seen as 'vacation' for family place. I have no idea why. And infact I know many friends and their family who went for vacation there. Pattaya, Krabi and Phuket. Bangkok basically is avoided with family.

Also Phuket is considered as one of the best honeymoon destination too here, especially after India's fiasco with Malaysia, and I have many many friends who went to honeymoon there. Which is again acceptable I guess, but family visit. I can never understand why.
