Sticking It Out.

In April 2005 I first thought about leaving Thailand. Mrs. Stick had headed back to Bangkok and I extended my stay at home by a week. I was sitting outside on one of those perfect Auckland days when there's nowhere else you'd rather be. The cloudless sky was a deep vivid blue you never see in Bangkok and breathing in the fresh morning air was like a hit of pure oxygen. Sipping my morning coffee, the opportunity cost of living in Bangkok was staring me in the face.

There are quite a few of us "long timers" who have grown tired of the bar scene. I think I was in Cowboy once last year and I live within a 5 min walk. Eventually you tire of it. It changes and you change. The fact that there are coyote girls there, insane prices for local beer and other alcohol, combined with the fact that I just find most of the girls there boring, and it is just not a place I want to be. Now if you could pay a "toilet fine" and take 'them back for a quick 1k romp in the hong nam, then it might be fun again.

There are very few dudes who have lived here for over a decade that still hang out in gogos. Don't get me wrong, there are a few. Hey, I loved it once and for quite a number of years, about 6. Midnight was the favorite hangout till it was sold to the Arab and then Cactus. But everything eventually gets old. When I first moved here I just could not understand the long term resident's attitude about the bar scene. Thought they were nuts to have pulled back. Now, I get it as it has happened to me.

I think it is great that guys still enjoy it. More power to them. But for my group of friends, when we head out, it is for some great food at one of the many wonderful local restaurants and then off to a few places we can get good beer and alcohol for a good price. Yes, they do exist. When wanting a little action, most of my friends have a list of numbers and "order in." I have a GF so it is oilies for me once every week or 10 days.

Yes, you are absolutely correct, and exactly why (largely) capitalist economic systems by unleashing the innate abilities, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit of the people. Despite the imperfectionsof such systems, will win over economic systems that punish success, treat people like infants, and create ever increasing government dependencies like pre 1980's Communist-socialism in China, and now Obama-socialism in the USA.

As you said, apparently when the flood crisis hit, many bar girls found other employment and never returned. Necessity, the opposite of government dependency, is the mother of invention one might say.

Well, I would say that Thailand has not produced a very good standard of living for most of its population. The wealth disparity is huge.

Northern Europe is still the best model ever devised. The perfect blend. Obama is far from a socialist. He is center right and his policies reflect that. There are many things that don't function well in a market.

The arrival of a loud gringo (yank) in the next cubicle, boasting about the "8 liters of beer" he had just drank put a damper on the mood and stopped yours truly from reaching his happy place within the allotted time. Nigerians and yes drugs including heroin, pimping, and other times all kinds of phone cons including a few months back caught using counterfeit baht notes to fool their targets. Most Nigerians in Bangkok of course are not criminals including legit gemstone dealers. With Hyde Sukumvit (and the Hyatt) on the way on Soi 13, the criminal types may need to find new locales.

Same at Soil 11 in regard to massage shops.

Entering from Soi 11 (the only entrance in fact) into Villa Market, then leaving the store via the regular exit, you will usually be accosted by dozens of massage girls, some very sleazy, but some quite cute, since the (mandatory and only) exit requires you to run past either 6 plus shops east bound (toward Soil 13) OR the normal way, back to Soi 11 and 6 more shops west bound. Minus a couple of LB's I think in total approx 50 to 60 girls work just in those very small shops, and they get to give their best sales pitch to every Farang that happens to shop at Villa Market.

There is no escape and they all know you probably just overpaid at Villa for your favorite Farang food and therefore have cash.

As for HIllary Clubs, Hillary 3 and Hillary 1 in Nana are fantastic. Other two clubs OK too.

Ok lets assume Bangkok monger wise has been going downhill for a long time, and in fact few dispute that, but one has to also admit it also started at the top of a very high hill. Second, look around the world, practically every monger destination is getting hit either by the ballbusters and / or NGO's along with their hype up "trafficking' claims" pressuring govt and LE / or just huge price increases. Just a few examples 1. Southern China. Donnguuan now a huge LE crackdown 2. Sosua, Dominican Republic, crackdowns combined with business interests who prefer cruise ship tourists over mongers. 3. Angeles City. Hard core 3rd world, and aside from various crackdowns, top end girls in venues like Club Atlantis now don't even want to deal with Farangs anymore, preferring Koreans and Japanese. 4. Notable prices and living cost increases in a number of areas. Brazil a few years back and now Burma, which also has the NGO's all over the place. 5. Macau still OK but is always expensive, with, air quality so bad it makes Bangkok look pristine, and not practical given high living costs to either live there or make frequent visits 6. Cambodia has potential over time but infrastructure still poor and prices no longer rock bottom.

Looking around the globe, the trend is not that good.

The point is in that larger context Beergarden in relative terms is still a pretty good place.

It is true, its hard to find hotties unless you hit it the right time, and that can take a lot of visits, and its not like NPL which is free to walk by, so you got to buy a drink each time you visit.

I will take your word for it, but what do you see as the connection between The Floods and Beergarden (among other places) going further down hill?

One of the things I find most amazing about Thailand is its resiliency. With each and every set back, SARS, the tsunami, the Songkhran Riots, the Yellows taking the airport, the Reds the center of the city, the floods, an open rebellion in the South, world economic turmoil in 08, and now the PDRC, Thailand seems to not roll over and die, but come back stronger each time.

One would think that each one of the events would increase the number of gal in the "scene," but in fact numbers and quality have dropped after each event. Of course it is not really the event but the general development of the country.

The flood however was interesting. Many of the gals stopped coming to work FL as they could not get to central BKK. The BG was very sparse during those couple of months. Many of the gals just never returned, perhaps finding other employment.
