I don't go back quite to 1999, but compared to 2006 or so, the freelancer scene has obviously went down the drain. I doubt the PM system of this site can make up for dozens of decent mid-20's freelancers out on Sukhumwit each night (and plenty of new ones coming in), as there used to be.

Sure, dating sites offer more choice now in that segment, but that's comparing apples and oranges. For a Thai-speaking white guy under 50, I doubt dating Thai girls was ever much of a problem. Granted, it's a boon for the subset of guys looking for a relationship, who can use the internet but lack in people skills or Thai language skills.

Personally, I think the freelance market is picking up. As the entire market changes into a short time Tourist-oriented one, the FL scene becomes a better alternative. No expensive lady drinks, no ridiculous bar fines, less BS overall.

I think that depends on one's modus operandi. For the guy who wants to do the internet thing (with dating or psuedo-dating) or hit the late night discos it might be a bit better. But for the dude that wants to head out to a FL joint like Tmae or Nana Disco, find a good looking semi-pro, speak a few words, and pop off to the ST hotel for a good sesh it is definitely worse. Having a girlfriend the last thing I want to do in engage in wh*remancing. The idea of having to meet a girl at a mall and have coffee or a meal with or trying to entertain a group of gals at a disco while listening to bad music at 3 am has never had any appeal.

Nana disco used to be awesome. You could head in about 1230 am (they closed at 2 am), do a lap, make eye contact, and boom you were golden.

Also the street scene was quite good. You could wander the odd side of Suk and meet countless girls. You could not go 50 meters without running into gals on the game every night. Now Lower Suk is just an ugly place. Dirty, full of an amazingly nasty demographic. I can't blame gals for not wanting to be there. It used to be just tourists and Western mongers. Now, Yesh!

Thermae started picking up about 1100 pm and stayed open till 6 am. GoGo gals who did not get BF would head there and by 230 the place was packed. Between Nana the and Thermae the FL scene on lower Suk was pretty amazing and required little to no effort. Oh, and if you were in Cowboy or Nana at closing gals who did not score a customer that night (and there were always scads of them) could be had as they were coming out of work. "Go with you" would be heard like an echo. You had to shoo them off like flies. Now they make so much cash they have no need to do that. It is work to find a good FL these days.

My point is that it's better now, to those who are willing & able to adapt with the changing times & take advantage of the information age with its technology. Others who don't evolve get left behind, always frustrated & disappointed, ever sadly reminiscing about days of old.

The scene is different. Whether or not it's better, or worse, is subjective. To my taste, it's worse because it lacks that indefinable, but real, "sanuk" quality.

However, I suggest you look at a few demographic studies. In fact, somebody posted one to Stickman's site a while ago, but I'm too lazy to find it. It had a very cogent analysis, along with visual aids. The cold, hard, fact of the matter is that the birth rate in Thailand has dropped through floor. Fewer girls mean fewer girls in the P4 P industry, no matter how you want to sugar coat it.

Add to that the booming economy, where women now don't have to work in a bar unless they want to. The result is that the dregs tend to wind up in the farang-oriented bars. Again, this is inarguable.

Back in the 1990's you didn't have the widespread use of technology like cell phones, the internet & sites like ISG that make mongering so much more convenient & easy in 2014.

Nowadays without even leaving his room a guy can read forum reports & PM thousands of members to gain an endless supply of new girls. In the 2010's a semi inteligent monger could easily hit the alleged 90% of the 1990's.

Not only could he hit that figure in Thailand, but in other nations all over the planet.

Moreover in so doing this hobbyist could save all the time he wasted in the 1990's in leg work & sitting around in bars etc searching out his desired lady preferences. Additionally there is also the potential savings in costs such as transportation, drinks, tips & bar fines.

Things are also way better now as regards STIs, infrastructure & comforts.

Thanks for reinforcing my point so succinctly. LOS has changed, for better or worse. It's now, as you described, a Tourist-oriented scene, not a Traveler-oriented scene.

Personally, I never thought time spent in bars, learning the ins and outs of the game, getting to know and hang with the girls, a waste of time. Sure, I didn't get to pork 20 girls in 5 days, but that was never the point.

I liked your report. I know we all want quantity and variety, but it sounds like Mamasan too care of you. My question,. What is wrong with March in BKK? That was my target time.

Maybe it was just me but it was too hot and humid. Mamasan did take care of business, gratis and I actually felt sorry for her, jaded though we both are.

Because of the heat, I spent way more time in the room than anywhere else, but the trendy apts do have a nice pool deck FWIW.

Dude, technology has brought out way more punters. There were way more gals on the game in 99 then there are now. Why? Because the economy was in the hopper. Staring salaries for Uni grads are way higher than 99. A gal could not live on what she was paid then and many supplemented their income through prostitution. Now, that need is not there, so what you are left with is the dregs. New found economic freedom has also meant that gals are choosing dudes around their own age now. Let's face it in 99 when the average starting salary for a Uni grad was 8 k a month, even with a partner making the same it was a struggle. Now a Uni grad can get about 20 k so that's 40 k for a gal and her Thai dude. More that enough for a decent start. In a few years they are making 60 and can look at a condo, car, etc. The "Thai" dream.

Sadly I am way more savvy. I speak the language, know the tricks, and see what is accessible and in the P4 P realm it is not so great. In fact, you are about the only resident I have heard say it is better now than it was.

If you were to talk about "dating" then I might agree with you. There are plenty of late 20's early 30's gals out there to date, but we are talking P4 P here.

First. I read the forum yet had I hooked up with a more experienced BKK hand, I might have salvaged the trip.

I was told in advance that "3 weeks is too much time in BKK" and that I should have planned to go to Pattaya, yet.

Tastes vary, so I forged ahead solo. I booked a great deal for a room in the "trendy apartments" on Soi 11 I think.

Became a regular at Spanky's bar in front of the building and frequently went to the Villa market for groceries, beer.

Etc. At one point I befriended a mamasan from one of the massage places who ended up fucking my brains out.

Several nights in a row in my apt. Mistake. I found myself sneaking out of my building via the Sukhumvit entrance.

So as to avoid the 18 hr / day surveillance from her girls.

The one time I brought a beer garden girl (big disappointment) back via Sukhumvit I had her walk ahead of me.

Through the Sukhumvit entrance and past the security. In March it's damned hot also, I might return again but if.

Reading your posting, it doesn't sound as if you did very bad. Having a hot mamasan servicing you with great sex several nights in a row, is something many of us would rate high on our to-do lists!

And you found out that social control in Thailand is rather strict and there are eyes everywhere? Actually, it is only as strict as you let it be. Just smile as you walk past. Of course, you will not get the same kind of service from your mamasan anymore. Even in LOS you cannot eat your cake and still have it too.

Everyone of us will have had a less stellar experience from time to time, but even my worst sessions in SE Asia still rated much better than the average of my sessions in Europe. And it is cheap in Thailand to forget the bad session with a much better one, a few hours later.

The weather is something you will have to suffer, unless you limit your stay in Thailand to the "high season" period (November. February). Travel and accomodation will be more expensive; the agogo clubs will be more crowded with punters; there will be more competition for the better girls; ... up to you to see if the cooler weather warrants all of that.

But let these small hick-ups not spoil your appetite to come back. It is my personal experience that the more time you spend here, the better you become in more easily discovering the good providers and enjoying your trip even better.
