Personally, I think that it is extremely dumb to carry large sums of baht around. I'd rather hit an ATM 3 times. Now granted, I have a Thai Bank account that makes it easier and cheaper from me than for casual visitors.

Agreed. I thought that post about using an ATM with a security guard was strange.

My MO, I bring about a $100 worth of Thai Baht from my home country, order it from the bank so I have THB when I touch down in BKK.

Then on the first or second day I go to one of the many malls, which have banks and I get cash from there as I need it throughout my trip.

I have a Chares Schwab card which reimburses all ATM fees so I can money as needed instead of carrying a ton of cash on me or in the safe at my hotel.

MTW is on Patpong Soi 2, upstairs.

There are a couple of ways to get there. Both start out walking away from Silom towards Surawong. Walk past Foodland (on your right) and past SOL (RIP). Skip the stairs going up in front of SOL, and stay "outside" on the street, not "inside" under the arcade.

Easy way for my lapses of memory: I can never remember which staircase up, so I just walk to the last staircase, the one before the Pink bar. Go up the staircase, turn RIGHT.

Slightly more direct way: the staircase AFTER the SOL staircase. Go up and turn LEFT. You'll be SLIGHTLY closer to MTW, but it's a minimal difference. I usually take the above just because it's a no brainer.

In the photos: leftmost is the "last stairs-turn right at top", then "Middle stairs-turn left at top", finally "Meet the World sign" (top of the photo, white print on black). MTW is the white bar.

OK, so without getting into a pis**ng match, I did not find 96 to be attractive at all.

I don't think I've ever even seen a security guard at any ATM I have ever used in Thailand at night.

For you newbies to thailand, you really don't need to take such security steps to take a few bucks on the ATM.

I just make use of all the advantages available, and given that this bank is on my route from abode to BTS, it's CONVENIENT, the security a plus and thrown in for free. (Believe Stick had a letter from a reader who detailed a snatch attempt recently.) And, given a bit of intelligence and planning, I don't run out of money and need to make a late night withdrawal. Granted, that does come down to making a few large withdrawals rather then frequent small withdrawals. Even when the ATM fee is reimbursed, I do my best to not take advantage of Schwab. But to each his own.

And yes, I do take the bank's free toaster when opening a new account even though I already have a toaster...

First stop: walk down to my favorite bank's ATM. The ATM's are in a vestibule outside the bank entrance, with a security guard present. Easy to tell if there's anyone around, and with the guard and the vestibule, close to zero chance of a snatch and dash with your cash. But... No security guard, ATM's dark. Damn. Luckily enough, have a local sim card so check Google maps for another ATM. Same bank has one a block away. A bit exposed, but not directly on the street, and then the wallet is topped up. (Seems the closure was a one time thing; has been open since).

I don't think the majority of us are good looking, that's usually the first step to becoming a punter because you're not good looking enough to get women LOL.

I have a hotwife who knows and approves of what I do in BKK. I have lost a step or two but I was doing this when I was younger and still had my looks. Worked like a charm in Crazy Horse for me just before Covid lockdown. Pulled out a few from a thick wad of notes to pay for my beer which set the voice telegraph alight and there was a PYT sitting next to me in no time. BTW, anyone know how Crazy Horse is doing?
