Not all bars in Patpong are ripoff joints. Go to Patpong 2. Ignore the touts and do not go into any bar that has not been recommended here on the forum. The bars worth visiting are Electric Blue, The Strip, and Bada Bing. I promise nothing untoward will happen to you in any of these three establishments and you might have a real good time. I plan on spending one evening in Patpong 2 when I visit BKK again, just for the hell of it and for a change of venue from Cowboy and Nana. I know Electric Blue has some nice girls and in bar action can occur at the Strip. Somebody else recently remarked that Bada Bing had some lookers. I will post a report after my visit.

MadSkillz; Queens Castle 1 on Patpong 1 was the bar where I popped my Thai cherry. I will never forget that place. The year was 1989. I was visiting Bangkok and Phuket with my American GF at the time. One night just before dinner we got into a fight and she started to sulk. Russians can be found in the coffee shop of rajah hotel. There are many african ladies available on Sukhumvit road near soi 11-13 after 10 PM. I am not sure about the rates as I am not interested hence never asked.

Airport exchange counters offer poor rates. If you are staying around sukhumvit then go to vasu exchange. It is located under BTS Nana station and offers good rates. They even have a website where you can check the current rates. Pattaya has many street options where rates are displayed so you can look around for the best offers.

Always carry 100 or 50 USD bills. Lower denominations will fetch you less rates.

I just wanted to warn everyone of the rip off bars on Pat Pong 1.

Bars on Patpong have been running this scam for years. It was brave of you to try to bluff your way out of the situation. And it is fortunate the bluff worked. Over the years I have heard and read stories in which the bluff did not work. The sad endings involved the police showing up and threatening to jail the poor punter for refusing to pay a "legitimate" bill to guys getting badly beaten and then arrested by the police. I have no idea if these stories are true. All have been hearsay. Frankly, if I was in that situation, I'd pay the 3000 and get out fast. But then I stay away from the area so I won't get caught up in that scam.

We went to Queen II which I had gone to years ago without incident. People have said that the king / Queen group is the most reputable. This time we went in an old hag waitress showed a drink menu without prices. I asked the price of a beer and was told 100 baht. Fair enough. She brought back two beers, a lady's drink and no bill. I asked why was the lady's drink there. She said "Oh good luck for me. " I told her that I didn't order a drink for her and not buying her a drink. She sat down the drink and walked away. Big red flag. I looked around and saw two other customers. I looked at the stage and saw this horrible line up of 2 scale women and a few ladyboys that made ugly women. After 3-4 minutes a girl came on stage to do a quick dart show. I called a waitress over to ask for the bill and was told that I had to walk over the the cashier. Another red flag. As soon as I went over I was presented with a bill for over 3,000 baht. 300 for each beer, a lady's drink and entertainment charge. I told them that I'm not paying for false changes and immediately took out my cell phone as if to call the police. The mamasun then said "Ok how much you give me? Ok just give me 600 baht for the drinks. " I went back to my seat. They turned the music down, closed the door and stood near the door. I pretended to dial and talk on the phone. I was in fact trying to call the police but could not remember the number. After a few short minutes the mamasun angrily said "Ok give me 200 baht and get out!" I had it in my hand because I knew that all we rally owed. I handed it over and we quickly made our way out of there. Under no circumstance will I ever visit a bar in Pat Pong again. If you must visit a place in Pat Pong be careful and if it's up stairs, forget it.

Only change a minimum amount at the airport as the exchange rates are better in town. Enough to pay for transportation to your destination. In Bangkok I use the arab money changers in lower Suk between soi 3 and soi 5. In Pattaya the exchange rate is prominently posted it is easy so shop around. Bring pristine and the newer style $100 USD bills for the best exchange rates.

Only a quick report as more wil come next week when have more time. The Den, stopped in to see it last week. I would guess 10 to 15 girls sitting on coaches inside. This was about 4 PM and they had opened at 3 PM. One or 2 customers at the bar talking with a girl. Reminds me more of a hostess bar from the past. I am sure the girls are available but didn't inquire. It was a little dark so can't tell quality If remember correctly standard drink prices 150 be. Might work with afternoon alternative. Don't know if have rooms or take out. Hope this helps.

Over the past few months, my last few visits to Nana have been depressing, but tonight's visit was the most depressing by far.

I have already written off Soi Cowboy, because it is populated by far too many coyotes to make searching in Cowboy enjoyable. The coyotes add too much uncertainty, in terms of finding a girl to go with. No doubt, with time one can uncover who might be possible to pull, outside of the old style bars such as Suzi Wong or others of the type, but the occasional visitor to Bangkok does not have the time to build up that sort of knowledge even with the help of boards such as this one. Baccarra has possibilities, but one must fight against the natural inclination of the girls to prefer a particular type of clientele. And Shark has been good but it is looking a bit rundown as of late. Crazy House was my last stop tonight, it did have half the girls nude on stage, but more than half of those should have kept their clothes on. Cowboy was shut down by the unfriendly boys in brown before 1:30 am. It is now a poor caricature of itself, and like Nana it is surviving on a currently undeserved reputation.

Back to Nana. Looked in almost every bar, with the exclusion of the too common lady boy bars. Took a drink in about five bars, including Mandarin, Rainbow, the bar above Mandarin (never known its name, but it has the topless schoolgirl dancer style) and a couple of others. Needless to say, it was a whole lot of nothing. Visiting Nana even a few years ago used to be about choosing one from one hundred possibilities. Now, it is look at one hundred and maybe find one. Perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, but there is a tremendous number of late 20's and early 30's average women masquerading as sexy because they are dancing on the stage in various stages of undress. The all too rare truly attractive girl knows she is exactly that, which makes grabbing such a girl a much more complicated and time consuming exercise.

The premise of a collection of bars such as those in Nana is to have the number of the desirable girls outnumber the number of potential customers in a given night. In this type of dynamic, the motivations and incentives for creating liaisons clearly rest with the girls, leading to much better prices, and much better experiences both within the bar and outside of the bar. But now with the numbers of seekers outnumbering the number of desirable targets, the targets gain power in this system, and for the guy spending money in the bar, much of the fun (in my case, all of the fun) is sucked out of the system. The No Entertainment Plaza should drop Entertainment from its name, become a No Plaza, which I mean to imply is simply close NEP. It is a waste of time and money to visit the NEP now, unlike even a few years ago (similar to Cowboy) where great fun could be had, and a partner for the night or for an hour, could readily be found with little search cost.

This post might sound like much bitterness coming from one dreadful night, and if it does, this is true. But it also reflects a sum of experiences built up over a considerable number of visits to NEP and Cowboy over the past year. My hope was that each bad night was an exception, but it is not the case, the quality of the experience continues to go down. Thankfully Pattaya still has some life.

In the end, I can see why many frequent visitors to Bangkok or residents in Bangkok discuss having a favorite or a girl they continually rebook. With quality finds few and far between, one better hold onto the good girls once found. Yet, in a city as large as Bangkok, with historically as varied a sex scene as what it has, I find it surprising and disappointing that a very few places, and a select few girls, tend to dominate as destinations, again as reflected in the conversations on this board. The beauty of Bangkok to me, at least since I first visited the city in 1987, but then from 1998 when I started to regularly go there, was the great variety that could be found, and the really good time one could have in the gogos. A new good experience was always lurking just around the corner. As soon as you dispensed with one girl you could find another one who was better and more fun than the previous one.

Not anymore unfortunately. It is either going to take a great influx of new talent from a couple of neighboring countries, or a 1997 style meltdown, to stimulate entry into this industry and bring new life to an industry where old life dominates now.

In Bangkok SuperRich 1965 has very good rates. They have convenient branches at the Asoke and Chidlom BTS stations. They have a slightly better rate at the head office near Central World. You can find rates and locations on their website.
