i had a long discussion with an older japanese chap a few nights ago which started at soi 7 beer garden and ended at thermae. he, too, is dismayed at the japanese willingness to overpay, and puts it down to two factors: 1) the relative low cost of, say. 4000 baht for a short-time in bangkok compared to what the same (but probably less fun) would cost in a major metropolitan area in japan, and 2) the willingness of the japanese to pay a premium to have a girl who speaks even marginal japanese. a lot of the thermae girls have attempted to learn conversational japanese, whereas the girls at establishments with similar "systems," such as beer garden, have not. a lot of japanese really hate to be forced to try to speak english. at any rate, bear in mind that there are experienced japanese in thailand who resent the expectation on the part of the girls that they are willing to pay exorbitant prices.
