Day 1:

Arrived at the Bangkok airport around midnight, waited about 20min to get my luggage and then followed the directions from in this forum about where to catch a legit taxi. Was worried a little about the scams going on in the airport but nothing happened, so I figured I was off to a good start.

Followed the signs to the taxi stand, talked to the girl and told them Livingstone's Lodge. She had no idea what I was talking about, so I showed her the map I printed out and she then wrote SV33 on the ticket. I later found out from the taxi driver that they use 4 letters for addresses or some such thing. I could very likely be wrong, but that is what I understood it to be. She gives you a ticket, you then wait in line until another girl calls for you to give her the piece of paper and you taxi driver will be waiting for you.

Once in the cab he starts on about something I don't understand due to my failure to learn any Thai and his inability to speak much English. I think he is asking where to go so I keep repeating Livingstone's Lodge and he has no clue. So I show him the map and then he seems to know where to go. He then continues on about something and I hear the number 500 and baht attached to it and then 30 seconds later I hear the word "meter" and I finally realize he is trying to negotiate an upfront fee (as mentioned to watch out for by the airport guide) so I say "meter" which at that point he looks disappointed and turns on the meter. He then explains to me the tolls I need to pay and the 50 baht surcharge.

Not sure how long, but it is about 1:30am and this guy is cruising at around 60kmh getting passed by every cab and car on the road, so I'm wondering at this point if I'm paying not only for distance but time as well (anyone know as I never figured that out). We finally turn onto the Sukemvhit and I get aquatinted with Bangkok traffic and I see a sign that reads "nana" and I realize this is nana plaza and it looks like it just got out, so I start looking at what is going to be on the menu in the next few days and I was mostly pleased (as was the cab driver, we almost hit a few cars as he was looking at the girls too).

So for the newbies, always say "METER".

Now, don't expect some big driveway or large sign pointing you into the Lodge, the place is tucked away by a walkway and in front of this walkway are taxi guys hanging out and street vendors selling food so they kind of block it and hide it a bit (at least at night) and that is what made me miss it the first time. This time there was a LL staff member waiting for me and he took my suitcase and led me in. Once in I meet Guido (who is a hell of a nice guy by the way, and anyone who tells me they have so much beer they decided to sell some of it is a friend in my book! ). After a quick tour around the place I'm led to my room and dream about all the naughty things I'm about to do!

Has ginseng ever actually been tested to see how it measures up to these claims? Big claims + high price + no testing seems like a very beneficial formula for the seller, mainly.
