The Thai education system is one of the worst in the world. Thais don't learn. They memorize, then forget.

One of the root causes of this lack of interest in anything of substance is that most Thais are quite content to remain in their little back-water of a country, speak Thai only, eat Thai food, only, watch appalling Thai TV, only and happily remain ignorant of the rest of the world.

BTW, even if you can speak Thai and Isaan, the conversations aren't going to be any more interesting. They still talk about "weather hot", "tomorrow hotter", and, of course eating - one of the major topics of Thai conversation.

I very much respect your scope on this. Many Western teaching styles were learn by rote not too long ago. Thais are very into their own culture even to the point of it being fatuous. However, they still have things to teach us beyond the third Buddhist precept. The balance even a BG has between sa-nook (fun) and gì-rí-yaa maa-rá-yâat (decorum) is fascinating.

Some rural folks are simple while others drink in the world. Most people from Isaan are straightforward and intrinsically nice - with rare but major exceptions.

BTW, Central Thais refer to Isaan people, especially from Buriram and Surin as "Na ling" or "monkey face" because of the high cheekbones, flat, squat noses, big foreheads and dark skin. Now, THAT's racism!

Then the family have to pay a fee, which may not sound like much, but it can be for many families. So what happens is that the family prioritize and send the boys to school. The girls stay and work on the farm speaking Thai or local dialect until they get to a point where they want to explore and head to a bigger center. They arrive in the city (you can sit at a cafe and watch them get off the bus, if you like) with good farming skills - not much use - and little formal training in English. They get menial jobs that pay poorly and have trouble meeting costs.

Even if you happen to meet one who is supposedly educated and can speak perfect English, the conversation is still going to likely be somewhat bland and un-inspiring.

Thai English teachers can't carry on a conversation in English (they know all the grammar rules, though). So, how do you expect Thais who've studied English in Thai schools to speak the lingo?

English schools abound in this country because in fact, Thais never quite learn to speak the language properly, even after years of study. Most have no real drive to learn the language, but go through the motions because they think they should. Language schools bank on them dropping out, coming back and dropping out again.

OK, so even though you have a tertiary education, your spelling, gammar and syntax aint perfect, neither is mine. The structure of Thai is different to English.
