I guess I should have phrased my question better. It's not that I have a problem with buying something while I'm in a bar, the question I had was, would it have to be booze (or even beer)? If it is, then the idea of going into a place is pretty well moot. If, on the other hand, they'll let me drink some bottled water or something along that line, then I'm in business.

As for how they make money, I was under the impression, from the different discussions here and elsewhere, that the house collected a fair percentage on the "lady drinks". So, if you're buying for a lady (or two or three), they should be making a nice profit off you, no matter what you've buying yourself, no? Or is that too thin a margin for them?

You will get hassled as you should be. What’s the issue with buying a soft drink or two? Obviously you’ve gone into the bar to enjoy yourself. Why should you be able to get this enjoyment for free?

It’s how the business model works, the bar makes some money off the customers who come in and just admire the ladies. If you want to enjoy their closer company, you buy them drinks and the bars make a little more for this extra level of enjoyment for you. If you actually take the girl out and deprive the bar of their money making employee for the rest of the evening, you’re “fined” an additional amount for you to enjoy this further level of pleasure. This system has worked well since time immemorial.

If you don’t think it’s worth 100 baht to enjoy what the bar has to offer, then don’t go in. You should not expect to get it for free.
