It is one thing to make it clear that you will pay a little extra and to do so following a high standard of customer care. It is quite another to pay a surcharge for a high standard of customer care in the hopes that the act of paying the surcharge will ensure it happens.

The former makes good sense, the latter make no sense whatsoever! Do you get in a taxi, say, I am late for a flight, and here is a tip just in case you get me there on time, but keep it even if you don't, in fact keep it even if you don't try?

Now that the tipping issue is out of the way... this 500 baht isn't even a bloody tip, it is an institutionally mandated fee based around the colour of your knob! Once more, by all means tip the girl. If you think she might find you a bit more disgusting because you are a farang, or a redhead or whatever, tip her, but, don't fall into the trap of thinking that this fee is by any means a fucking tip, it just isn't, it is a tax. For a tip, at least you can hope for some sort of return. Actually scratch that, it is worse than a tax as well, in theory at least, tax dollars are spent on something to you (or the electorate of which you are a member) want, for this 500 baht you get absolutely fucking nothing except a metaphorical sore arse.

When I talk to people like you, I am not angry exactly, and don't feel bad towards them personally about it - it is more like watching someone who is really environmentally unfriendly - chucks polystyrene containers out the window of the car all the time etc... I just feel like, come on, the advantage and convenience to you is so trivial when weighed up against the damage that you and a thousand like you do to the environment at large. Small changes in the behavior of folks like you can lead to some very real and recognizable benefits for everyone (including you!).

To put it another way, if everyone thought the same way you do, then everywhere would charge an extra 500 fee... then, 1000, 2000.... before you know it, our brothers can only afford 1 week instead of 2, then a weekend, then not at all.

This has nothing to do with it. The charge is made by the house....the girl probably only gets a small piece of it. In all seriousness, there is no reason you should pay more, they only charge it because they can - dog, has balls, will lick.

This stuff drives me fucking crazy - mainly because the solution is so blindingly fucking obvious, yet, short of buying a placard and spending my days out the front of the place, I am utterly unable to implement said solution.

Do not patronize places that have stupid foreigner fees/unreasonable overcharges etc etc, then the establishments are left with 2 choices: become non-farang places (fine), or, lower prices/abolish fees until customers come back.

It is my teary eyed dream that once Jackson gets the wiki up and running (which will be supercool!) that we can maintain a boycott list in the hopes that members of this board will adhere to it and some real changes can be effected. We'll be like our own little mini UN with trade sanctions and embargoes - the only difference will be that we'll the US will be a genuine part of our new mongers UN rather than operating independently

I've been asked for all that and more for years... in fact, I remember paying 3k plus barfine for ST from Patpong about 10 years ago. I only paid this because my education was sadly lacking and I genuinely believed she wouldn't take any less. I look back now and shake my head with amazement at the younger me.

I apologize to every single person here for paying that much and contributing to unnecessary inflation.

What is asked for is completely utterly irrelevant, as relevant as the salt content of medium grade, high gloss patent leather, maybe even a little less so, because at least the latter probably matters to some chemist somewhere. The only relevant number is what they can get. The number they can get is set by you and I my friends. If the prices creep up we have but ourselves and our brethren to blame and noone else.

To come back to current prices, for LT you should be able to get 1500 + BF. I've never had anyone say no to 2000, but, since the 3k event mentioned above, I've never actually paid more than 1500 LT in BKK (the reason I mention 2k is that sometimes that is a number that always comes up while we are bringing the price down during negotiations).

I've had a grand total of one girl reject the 1500 number - in Nana Plaza. Noone from Soi Cowboy has ever said no to it (and somewhere between 50-100 at Nana have said yes).

My standard price for street walkers is 1000 LT, and I very rarely get complaints for that - usually I avoid all discussion about price with street walkers and just give them the 1000 in the morning/afternoon. There is sometimes a token attempt to negotiate more after the fact, but it is never very serious and we both know it.

Ocassionally street walkers are gogo dancers who have failed to find a customer that night, and try and negotiate a bit more than 1000. If I am in the mood, I will let them push me to 1500, but not one baht more. With that pricing structure, I have never had a no on the street.

To summarize - I've only ever had one girl reject 1500 LT in a gogo bar (and she said she would take 2k)
If there is no discussion, 1k LT is good for a street pickup.. only offer 1.5k LT under extreme duress and if you are really really keen.

Even after saying all this, the funny thing is, if I was to see someone overpaying and I went up to everyone else in the bar, pulled out their wallets, took a few thousand baht from each one, then, threw the money in a pile on the floor and set fire to it, then, handed each person their wallet back and spat in their faces as I did so, I'd be the one who'd get the shit kicked out of him, yet, my crime would only have a one off effect on each person, whereas Mr Overpayment is costing everyone over and over and over again into the future. Is it I, who openly steals from you and spits in your face, or Mr Overpayment who costs you money and doesn't even have the decency to look you in the eye while he metaphorically spits in your face, that is your greatest enemy?

After all is said and done, I'd pay you back the money I stole, and apologize for spitting in your face and explain it was vitally necessary to make a point, then, if you were really upset, I'd rent someone to lick it clean.
