Thai customs are different to western countries. Picking the nose is not considered quite as badly in Thailand. However blowing the nose in public is considered much worse if it makes a disgusting noise.

You are conditioning to find nose picking bad, but not everyone is.
I am more turned off more by finger up the bum then by finger up the nose.

Spazzo's is a great place if you don't mind spending the money. If I remember correctly, beers are about 300 THB ++ and mixed drinks about twice that.
