Some are really good like the Paiboon Talking Thai-English Dictionary. We can only try to approximate, and many approximations are not so good.

Spot on. I often cannot understand Thais trying to use English words with me. I am not that flexible. I ask them to speak Thai instead. It's more than an accent problem, it comes to pronouncing wrongly. The reverse happens also when we pronounce badly, however Thais get used to very common mispronounced words, and Pattaya would be a great example.
