What happened was a classic case of being outfoxed by people who know how far you are willing to go.

It's easy to be wise with hindsight but my rule is always take the hard stand against police and let them know you know your rights.

The best way to go about it is to let the hotel management know that you are being arrested before the police get you out of the hotel. The hotel does not want bad reputation so they will counter the police as they know the games these fellas are up to.

It's just that these cops knew your limits and were bluffing. Call their bluff by insisting on talking to management and asking one of the managers to go with you. As it ended up, you were all alone, did not know the law and could not bargain.
