I know it is not easy, but your best bet is to imagine yourself as a kind of white king, who might allow any of the girls to join you for the night for a small fee. Tip the staff regularly, as they provide an excellent source of information. Smile to people, but remember you are in control.

Another essential advice, never to forget. Do not believe a word of anything the girls say. Sad stories, study, occupation, anything they tell you is most probably a total fabrication. Concerning hygiene, girls got the message that sex is only with condom (BJ excluded). Last time I was here, the question if I was having condoms at my place was hardly ever asked, and unprotected sex was a distinct possibility with practically every girl. Don't be tempted. In normal circumstances it is not easy to get HIV, but a number of other very annoying diseases (some serious) are easier to catch than you might think.

Prices are 200 for a beer. 70 for a coke. With less than 400 you get a full meal. Taxis are still mad about prices. For a 5 minutes ride to the Hilton they ask 400. Remember they do not have a taximeter on board. As always in Africa, if you want to bu anything you must agree on a fare beforehand. Never forget this. And, since the competition is ferocious, just refuse and move on to the next if you don't get the right numbers. When I was trying to find a cab to go to the mall, one of the guys shot 1500 for a 25 minutes drive. While you can get a matatu for 50.

When in the CBD, walking at night is safe if you are watching your steps. There is a lot of security in the streets, private guards normally sleeping late at night but able to assist should something happen. ATMs are available. At Simmers, keep an eye on your drink. Some of the girls could try to spike it.

You can't smoke in any outdoor Java House Cafes but you can in Artcaffe ones & you can in the outdoor areas of some Dorman's Cafes but only after a certain time in the early evening. It's entirely arbitrary it would seem & as you can see so there's no issue for you & your heavily-smoking friend so I wouldn't fret. Just find the places that are happy for smokers by asking them to be honest, they'll soon tell you one way of the other.

Hunting places for non-pros? For a start Westlands, Galleria, Junction, Sarit, you name it, Nairobi is full of Shopping Malls (I think more than any other city in Africa north of South Africa) and they're great bets.
