That's the truth of Kenyan economic 'strength': it's the money-laundry capitol of Africa.
Sorry for the economics lesson. Back to AirBnB.
I can't speak for the coast, but I've done several Nairobi rentals.
Although you do have to be careful with dubious listings -- everywhere, not just in Kenya. But especially here. -- the more you're paying over $25, your chance of falling into dumps goes DOWN exponentially.
The biggest headache you'll run into for such places is over-pricing. But for the same reasons hotels try to stick it to us: e. G. Paying for name or reputation over quality; paying for location over amenities; hosts that provide the most basic amenities, but still equal to what you would get in a much-higher-priced hotel, etc.
I've rented several under-$20 spots, and you get what you pay for. If you need or expect anything fancy, you'll be sorely disappointed. Still, the places I've rented are safe (-ish), clean, conveniently located, large in space (one 1 BR flat had walk-in closets. I've never seen that, ever, in Kenya. Of course, the building was old as fcuk). Only one of them was actually worth more than its price, barely, because it offered some amenities that a few over-$20 places did not.
Although I don't recommend going under-20, especially if you're new to (under) developed countries like Kenya, the best way to screen ABB listings is like screening dating profiles:
It's more important what's NOT shown. For example, if there's no pic of the toilet, tub or bathroom, the bathroom is going to be a shitroom.
Some places list fake pics. Duh! Be skeptical. The fewer number of pics, be more skeptical.
If you see any listing saying they have a hottub (yup, go search for that), fcuk it.
If you're ready to take the plunge, book ONE night. This way, you limit the risk. Have a Plan-be spot queued to book if the first one isn't good enough.
Avoid any listing that posts more pics about tourist attractions than about the apt itself.
Beware that the better / best under-20 spots are on the 4th or 5th floor of a no-elevator building. The apt & views are usually worth it, but in exchange for exercise. The hosts are supposed to put that in the description, but. This is Kenya.

My first African soiree.
So I'm a long term lurker here and really appreciate the trip details on this site.
I'm going to be in Mtwapa and Bamburi from October 28. Nairobi in middle November. Its my first time to Africa but I love those African girls. I've traveled allot to Thailand and Philippines and am not unused to mongering. But I will be careful. I've booked the first 4 days in a airbnb apartment in Bamburi beach and then will explore for other options. I will try and run an updated trip report as I go along as I feel the need to add to the forum. Updates as I go.
I've checked the details of hotels for Nairobi on here but can't seem to find any recommendations fro the westland area that are not over $100 per night. Is this a normal price for this area. I've been looking at the hotel Emerald which is OK but expensive compared to other places. I'm so spoilt by Thailand and Pattaya prices and choice.

He have now his lessons and know that you not must interfere and go in competition with that kin of people when you want to stay in the country any where in Africa.
The lesson is stay under the radar of that kind of people and play it safe so that you live safe and longer.
The most muzungu's think that they are untouchable because the most Africans play that they like them and for the family you are a status symbol, but do not underestimated what can be happened when they not have profit of you in one or another way.
That is also the reason that I hunt up country and make friends special with the chiefs and elders because I am for them a status symbol because they have a muzungu friend from abroad.

I am wondering or you are real know Kenya and the rest of Africa what Neddy tell. I am a muzungu and living all more than 10 years in Kenya also married with a Kenya lady (I am 69 and she is 58).
I have never problems because I respect her and she respect me. I am a hunter and go around Kenya. I live in the suburb of Nairobi.
The lesson what I have learned is be polite and respect the other side in a good way, and you get what you want special when you like me not hunt in the city but up country I have meet ladies of practical all tribes in Kenya and not spend a lot of money for fun but always give them the respect what they want even help them out of problems with school-fees and food.
When you are in a small village buy some fruits and a drink on the market and make a social talk and you will be surprised special when you are with a old Pajero like me to show that I am not a rich muzungu they will give you all the information what you want and going with you to the small hotel for a lunch of diner.
Special the single lady what have the shop on the street like to a company you and even offer you a better option for your need. (That is my experience) because very lady want to show that she have a muzungu friend and show you to her relatives but be straight and let them know that you are not willing to married.
Know also they are all will coming to Nairobi to look for a job and getting a free drive and some money is for them a big present. I do never take them to my place but drop them in town so that they can go to the relative or boy friend who lives all ready in Nairobi.
The most in the up country do not have money for this kind of travel because the payment for the daile job is 200- 300 Ksh for a day what means ther is no saving for any trip or they must have a contract with some body who will pay the travel.
So my friends I am retried and live a good and simple live without any difficulties here even my friend who was living in Kampala is now vacated to here because in Uganda where a lot of problems for him.
Greetings Ngong.

I'm kinda surprised that you haven't visited TZ I mean Dar has a beach, but what I will say about it is that while I don't doubt Vanilla and Bashaa's stories about TZ it's different than Kenya. In Nairobi if you talk to a girl there's an instant understanding of what you want and they're very accomodating. They are Non pros but they understand that if they fuck you (at standard rates of 2 to 4 k) that they will have 2 to 4 k more than they had before. Other than Kenyan beauty parlour massage joints not fucking generally speaking she's interested. A Dar non pro might go on a date with you and not put out like a regular date in the west with the idea that she'll fuck you later. On one hand you can't get mad because you didn't ask to fuck you asked her to hang out or show you around but one the other hand you're thinking "be at at!! You know I'm a tourist what did you think I wanted?
Neddy do African chicks fuck you because you're white or because you're "rich"? Because a causal reader of the Africa forum hears about all these freebies in Africa and think that it will be like that for them. You're like me a budget traveler, I noticed that you stayed at the Strand hotel in Nairobi west so it can't be that they think you're really rich. Or do you think freebies is more about experience, willingness to venture off the beaten path and time. The time that I spent in Africa has been two weeks tops per trip. I do want to explore the continent but with me being early retired on a small salary I won't have money or time. That being said I do have to visit west Africa. Like you Southern Africa is off the list for the same reason expense of pussy and too high an HIV rate for a guy that likes to fuck all night and has slipped up more than once when there were either no more condoms or not stopping a girl when she mounts me raw after a quality BBJ.

Generally I am not do fond of CFA countries. I always look at soft currencies versus USD and EUR. And lastly Madagascar and Ethiopia. In the end it will be a mix. Choose 2 countries. Avoids problem with clingy chicas and almost no country has all year round good climate. What I avoid are all South African countries. High HIV prevalence. And too developed / expensive pussy. So that's my take on retirement hotspots. Africa is the future. Asia is squeezed out. IMHO.

I know I must RTFF in the Philippines but do you experience racism in the Philippines? I know there's racism everywhere and you can't escape it but I'll be damned if I live somewhere and people are looking down on me because of the way that I look.
I will read the Philippines forum and check out the youtube videos of mongers who spend a significant time there and finally take a trip to see it for myself. As far a TZ is concerned I liked the people and the women but it's a funny mongering country, meaning they kinda aren't used to mongers, You'll get hoes that will hop on your dick and be sticky but if you want to upgrade into non pro girls You might end up actually dating them and not fucking like in america. In Kenya I never dated a chick who accepted the date and didn't fuck whether for free or a fee. I did get freebies in TZ from non pro but it was rare enough for me to not like it. Other than that people where way friendlier in TZ.
One final point. I get that it seems like I'm asking rather stupid questions on here but I'm willing to ask the questions that others won't Most of the mongers in this section have either lived here and received a nice salary to do so, or spent very long vacays here and are experienced traveling mongers. It's different for a dude with limited experience mongering period and dealt with american women pro and no pro. American hoes want your social security number and ID for a dinner date and if you cum in five minutes the date is over and she has a long list of shit she doesn't do. Then you come to Africa and get super GFE compared to america. It might fuck with you. I went to Kenya and met a girl working at a cell phone shop and she lost her job. I didn't get to fuck her on my first trip and almost didn't on my second trip but we linked and we fucked "for free" She didn't ask for money but since I was literally flying back to america I gave her 5000 kes. Was that a mistake? Probably but I ain't jaded enough to think that at that point she's been running game the whole time for me to end up offering her half her months rent.
There's a lot of Americans going to Africa on Safari and there's a lot of African-Americans going "back to their roots" some of them are going to fall into some pussy and they're going to have the same questions that I had. One when they read the white guys fucking all these girls for free is it strategy on the girls part or are they lying? And do Africans like African-Americans? At the end of the day everyone wants to monger in peace, go to eastern Europe looking for cut rate strange as a Black man and you might get killed. So I heard.

I've seen it in Jamaica, DR and Kenya. Surprisingly, non-professional places will take service down a notch because your not white. I can't see Tanzania being much better brah.
