The scale of fake products in the market is not as large as you're implying in your post. Go to any respectable pharmacy in Nairobi and you'll find durexs and trojans, all real. Nairobi has a huge expat community and many stores that stock goods from the US, UK etc to serve that community.

To say he should go to the Marriott just for condoms is laughable.

It is a few years since I was there. There was no problem earlier in the day but in the evening and late at night the needed you to register the lady and if the room as not a double they charged the surcharge. I always booked my own work travel accommodation but they charged an extra 100 for a double so never did it. In the end I stayed in other locations.

I ended up changing to Palacina. I thought I had a double occupancy booked at Sarova but didn't. I tried to change to a double through the Chase Sapphire rewards agent but they wouldn't let me do it. So weird. I cancelled the whole thing and made the change. Thanks much!!

They never billed me an extra penny. I thought Nairobi was awesome. I will not stay there again; life is too short to fight with a hotel.

Make sure you booked a double room as they used to charge a USD $100 or USD $200 surcharge per night for a guest. If you didn't book a double ask the reception to change the booing they may however charge you and extra USD $100 a night. I stayed pretty regularly and the staff would give me no leeway on this. I did ask on one occasion and they said it was management / owners policy to avoid these overnight guests. Personally I think they were afraid the families staying would complain or give bad reviews.
