There can be alot of hype about safety in African cities. True there are issues with car jacking late at night on some of the more remote roads. THE CBD however is pretty safe and I have regularly walked around certain areas at night. That being said you are alway safest getting taxis to and from your destination and get the number of a reliable driver that you can call when you want to go home. I would highly recommend highly recommend you venture out of the CBD as well.

You will stick out like a sore thumb on the East side so you are immediately more prone, unless you stay in your cab / car, windows sealed & drive through without stopping at all. That said, even on the West / North side of town you won't see many locals walking anywhere after dark. There's a reason for that. Shopping Malls here open til 10pm & there are many places that are alive with people off the roads, you just have to find out where they are but you won't find them just driving around the place very easily, unless you're in a cab (ideally a trusted one).
