Most people will thieve from you given a chance in Kenya. It might be the first day, it might be after 6 months but it will likely happen and of varying things and amounts. The girl may have no intention of doing so and maybe quite green but her friends will soon be advising her of the best ways to maximise her earnings if you like.

Mombasa does not have a developed red light district as you put it, it just has a woman force of which 90% is available.

If your savvy and mostly sober you reduce all chances of being scammed and robbed just like most other places outside the west and yes it is all a game. As long as you can put up with the poor standards then it is cheap for food, drink, rent and women. The sun shines, the beach is on hand, what's not to like? I would move back in a flash if I could.

It always depends. There is British pensioners surviving on 400 a month as well as the other end. The well to do expat lives in Nyali. Shanzu is sort in between. Mtwapa I rented a very decent 2 BR unfurnished for 180. If you cook at home than it works out around 150 a month. Githeri on the street is about 80 cents. If you have one GF which you shag and is low cost 100 to 150 a month is more than sufficient. The rest you can spend on some beers. It is advisable to have a reserve of 5000 stashed for emergency medical or flights. Of course no own car included. I spent on furniture about 500. You can buy everything used at the rehani. Only mattress new around 100. So everybody on its own. That's what I like about Africa. You can survive on 100 $ a month or you can waste 5000 $ a month. Up to you. Chicas I pay no more than 1000 ksh. I have been robbed only once. The Chica took the suitcase while I was out on breakfast. I lost about 2000 in hardware and cash half which was covered by insurance. Since than I improved on security measures. Since I live in Gambia I lost only one smartphone.

Any quick costs of what a flight would be from LOS Angeles California, how many days should I stay and just where should an African newbie monger visit?

Emirates to DXB from LA is 15 hours. Great movie selection, wide screens, wide seats, good food. The only drawback is you will need an overnight stay if you want to continue on with Emirates, as they arrive DXB too late for the last flight to Nai. You could probably catch another airline onward. Emirates flies from Dulles to DXB (12 hours) with a continuation to Nai after four hour layover in DXB, but you have to find a way to get to Dulles from LAX. All flights using super sweet A380! Like sitting in your living room during a bingewatch night. The only thing that can ruin the flight is a baby wailing the whole time.

Yeah I did that route once and it sucked compared to Emirates. I once did LAX to somewhere (can't recall, maybe Amsterdam as you say) from there to Frankfurt, Frankfurt to NBO. The motherfuckers routed me thru Canada on the way back, which sucked at immigration to the USA. KLM movies sucked, food sucked, and at 6 foot, 210 lbs my ass still had to squeeze into the seat. Can't recall the price, but not worth any of the misery. Emirates and I are in love, and I have had numbers given to me by two flight attendants. One Kenyan, the other Ugandan. A third supremely hot Kenyan working first class asked for my number when I got upgraded, but I could tell she did not believe I'm a Kenya frequent visitor, and I knew when she asked for my info I would never hear from her.

KLM-Delta from LAX to Nairobi, one stop in Amsterdam, for less then 1000 $ return, depending on your flight date. Flight takes about 25 to 30 hours including the stop.

Nairobi is a good starting point for a few days. Plan 2 weeks and move on to Mombasa North by flight or with the new fast speed train for a week. If you have more time--the better.

Check with Swiss or Lufthansa.

They both fly from California to their home basis and from there a decent connection will put you on their non stop flights to Nairobi.

United, being alliance partner of both, have sell rights with them too for the first leg to Europe.

I used to frequent Kahama before I started to go to Big Tree. I liked the hotel, and it was cheapest girl friendly hotel at that time, and hotel staff was friendly.

This noise from bar is really annoying, worst days or nights were karaoke nights, somebody singing badly. It felt like you were inside that bar.

Downstair rooms which are more expensive are little better, there is better insulation.

At that time, this noise was not so much problem for me since I went every night to Casourina, at that time it was still great place.

Compared to Big Tree Kahama has some advantages, especially air conditions, not only ventilator in rood like Big Tree. And mosquito net over the bed. And hot water. These things are missing from Big Tree. But Big Tree is directly in the beach. And girls come there and afternoons, and Cheers is near. So I just keep on going to Big Tree already long time.

Maybe there are cheaper hotels now in the beach than Kahama? I haven't check for long time.

Don't go near Kahama unless you like some of the worst bar / food service in Kenya, children running thru the complex all damn day, locals paying 500 bob to use the pool your paying much more to use, and being kept awake by loud ass music till 2 AM!

Had 12 nights at sai rock apartments, all went well, rooms a little tired these days but it is good location and secure.

There were more girls about this time than there has been the last few years, a lot of new faces, other than that there is not much to say. The usual haunts of cheers, casarj has, lounge, sheba.

I took 3 or 4 girls over my time spent in Mombasa and they got between 1 k and 2 k for an hour or two.

Can anyone there shed some light on the road widening / demolitions going on? All pointless unless they build a new bridge; any sign of that?

They say the reason is to widen the road and dual carriage it, though they have not put the job of doing it out to tender yet. The locals can't even drive as it is without making it bigger and faster. Africa.
