    Security in Mombasa

    Guys,

I just read the news article about the German tourist who got robbed! This is more serious than I initially thought because of the fact it was premeditated so it wasn't random, the victim was doomed the moment he got on that airplane!

Also this is not the first incident like this. They did another one also from the airport. Ad they followed him as well.

These criminals must be well organized and discipline to go to airport and wait for a 5 am victims to land.

If you are going there you should lookup your country's state department or foreign ministry travel warnings first.

You should consider your level of the communicated language and our confidence being around the locals.

Just be smart and stay away from "grey" areas and don't bring suspicion to yourself.

I had a great time last year and ever felt danger or threats. But I'm not pale white with a heavy accent. So I don't call attention to my self.

Daytime arrival should help prevent this

This is unfortunate news, but one incident is not enough to deter me from going there. I have already had a minor run in with Nairobi traffic police, but I got away from that with no loss of KSH since I played my hand well and technically had not yet broken traffic law.

This is also why I am super careful when departing any airport here in Africa. I never go with first taxi ride offer and I watch all around. It is much better to identify a potential problem at airport than down the road.

Sounds like that guy had no fun in Mombasa.

I mean, if you have to look back all the time in a taxi to see if you are being followed.

In the article they write also that there has been a case some years ago of a police officer who was part of a gang, following & killing tourists.

Indeed Dar es Salaam is a good alternative, as I can say from my own experience.
Hotel REEF also closed due to attack.

If you are an absolute addict then come with no valuable . When you go out take a wallet with 50 USD and some KSH to give the robbers. Hope it will be enough for them.
Wolverine, I am sorry that they stole your laptop in Mombasa. However, you said that you have not visited there after that, for three years now.

Do you really know there are some gangs targeting musungus?

I haven't hear about armed robberies in Mombasa, or increase of common criminality. I started to go there around three years ago.

Somali terrorists are another thing, I am also worried about them.

Don't let taxi drivers to take their friends to the Casourinha trip

In my last visit a few weeks ago there was no checkpoint near Mwatapa bridge, maybe because of the rain. It was there in my previous visit, but I did not have to pay ever. Drivers told me that they need to pay sometimes. Drivers also tell me that when they take musungu to airport, police ask them money later, on the checkpoint when they return from airport.

Often drivers also ask to pay before arriving to airport so that police don't see money at the arrival.

I have done various trips from Cheers to Casourinha with taxis, and almost always taxi drivers want to take their fellow driver with them to Casourinha.

In beginning I was nice guy and let them do that but then I heard that one of the guys was a drug dealer, so I did not want to bring any extra person with me anymore to the checkpoint.

Think about police finding drugs from the car where is musungu also, how much do you have to pay them for get out of that situation?

Can I have more info why I should be worried?

Of course you can be lucky 20 times - maybe even 50 - but 1 day they will rob you -
or if necessary even kill - they have nothing to loose !
Just continue to dream - I agree the Girls are sooooo nice -
but you get the same in Tanzania - much less risky...
I can understand a danger coming from somali terrorist throwing hand granade to the bar you are sitting. I am also worried about that, also locals there.

But where does this robbing thread is coming from?

I haven't read any reports of rising criminality in Mombasa, neither I have heard any stories from locals there.

Like I said I don't know about Nairobi, maybe that is more dangerous than before?

But what exactly I should be worried about in Mombasa excluding somali terrorist? I would like to see some facts. Not to start any flame war, but to know what to worry about.

I have visited Mombasa quite many times in recent years, and I have not seen any rise in criminal activity. I continue using matatus, although that is dangerous because traffic is so crazy. I know one girl who died while driving her own car in Mwapa road recently, other one who got injured in matatu accident in same road.

I keep on comparing Mombasa to South America and Rio de Janeiro. In Rio almost all my friends who have visited have been robbed, I don't believe that this has changed.

Why not? If you don't want to go there anymore it's fair enough. No reason to pollute the forum. If Leblon enjoys Kenya, I salute him. Still one of the nicest places to be.

So you need write google search for the "mombasa-prostitutes-speaks-out-on-why.html"

Or you can search by title of the article:

Erotic massage is something some of the massage ladies do not like or are familiar with. One can easily have them for company and sex but not directly connected to the massage, which is their job and for which they have education.

In the huts near the beach there is another reason why they are reluctant to spend sexual services. There are controlls and it is only allowed to shut the huts by a curtain.

Mainly Chinese (how can we exploit this country); Somali (maritime kidnap money no doubt); rich Kenyan and a few Westerners.

DXB-BKK and back? Standing room only, even during a coup!
