Great to hear from you mate. I remember very well. It was that very same day I popped the cherry of Ivy that was with us. So you moved on to Kenya. Cool.
Thank you for your advice on the Blue Marlin Beach Hotel. Will check it out and most likely just book this one. If you liked it, I will probably like it as well.
Any other advice on that place or Kenya as a whole? It seems to be a somewhat hairy place at times, but maybe not more or less than any other poor third world dump?

Mombasa is easier to get women, but that also attracts the seedier element too that can't work unchecked in Nairobi. Maybe your not taking good advise, or bringing too much you can't afford to lose. Staying at cheap hotels, which is a haven for disgruntled employees that steal. Never trust that smiling face, and everybody wants something. These are just people that have only know how to rip you off by the sword as opposed to the pen. I've been here 5 times in the last year, and only now have I started really figuring out the place. Another simple truth is that sharks smell blood. Ngong, BBJack, Hombre have been there for years, and love the place and have learned the rules-maybe the hard way, but they know how to work the systems. They are not broadcasting dire warnings all through the KE forum of like some some doomsday teller. They are too busy f*cking-a lot! The shark passes them by and come for you. Get it? The only reason I would not go back to KE is: Pricey and ego-inflated pros, clingy non-pros, poor service and lack of simple creature comforts. Kenya has nothing I have not seen in West Oakland, California; S. E. Wash. DC and Compton Crip and Blood territory. Sharks pass me by. Get it?

Anyway, I am now living in Nairobi. Bloody armpit of East Africa, but that's another story. My gf and I spent a delightful three nights in the Blue Marlin Beach Hotel.
It's on Diani Beach, on what they refer to as the South Coast, about 45 minutes south of Mombasa proper. I just checked Trip Advisor and it's advertising from 80 EUR and up. It's clean, on a beautiful beach and very nice. I highly recommend it. You can walk the beach about 20 minutes to the Sands Nomad hotel (rooms about 300-500 EUR) and have wonderful breakfasts and dinners. Open to public so not a problem if you're not a guest.
If you get to Nairobi, PM me. If Al Shabaab, thugs or crooked cops haven't gotten me, I'd love to see you.

I am due to go to Mombasa area in a couple of months. Well traveled and well mongered but never sat foot in anything south of UAE on the African continent. I am in Kenya for other activities than mongering but will try to taste some chocolate. I have this one doctors student I have been friend with for years. We chit chat more or less daily since a few months. She is 23 now. She wants to meet me, and although I am normally always avoiding any situation that locks me with a girl for more than a few hours, I am considering to book us in for 2-3 nights into some place. Looked at Tripadvisor and realized that places like Tijara Beach cost a fortune. What do you recommend guys? I want to see this bird, before I head to Malindi but can not decide how and where is the best way.
I don't mind spending a couple of 100 USD on hotel for a night but not 1000 USD per night like I got for Tijara Beach. Preferably safe and with a beach close by.
Is the whole idea with the student a stupid idea? Am I bringing cookies to the party?
Cheers!

Cash is not covered anyway. Cameras only to a certain limit or you pay at least 5 % of the value annually for a special insurance. Most hotel safes are too small for my cameras, so I have to leave them in my room somewhere.
There are too many reports in several medias that the tourism industry of Kenya is in deep troubles reflecting the poor and corrupt governmental structures.
I agree with the idea of a member avoiding Kenya and going to Madagascar next time. I've been there once in 1999 and I loved it. Security was an issue too. Guards in front of every hotel, but I was feeling safe traveling the country.
My question. What about Tanzania as choice replacing Kenya? Similar Wildlife, beaches, climate and travel distances.

I am al 10 years up and down in Kenya and never has nay body stolen my things and I hear many stories like this.
But when you try to find out what is real it is the most fake for the insurance.
Who let now a lot of cash in his room also camera and lenses.
The most of this stories are in a lot of the forums all over the world special Thailand. Santa Domingo. Brasil. Ukraine. Kenya. Etc.
I ask my self why people do this is it frustration or are they angry because the girlfriend have set them up.
Please be real and take also care of your goods any where in the world.

Posts: 489I warned that I saw the signs at the horizon; I saw the whole situation one year ago. So many people laughed about my statement; only a few tourists; more and more people from the country side moved to the coast. So many people slept on the street in Mombasa; it's only a question of time untill we ll seeing a dangerous situation.

Posts: 287WARNING. Kenya is more and more dangerous!
In 3 Weeks.I heard from about 6-7 People got scammed, robbed, stolen big amount etc. -
my self, they rammed a wooden door in my Hotel. Security and waiter didn't hear the crazy noise -
and even a group of guest living next to my room - nothing heard!. But the Lady in the next house hear it!
I think the guys were armed, so no one like to hear and see anything?
They have stolen everything - Laptop - Camera and lenses and a lot of cash.
The Hotel Platinum - Near Volume club. Never go there!!!! - I suspect the staff, maybe even the manager
are involved. The police came after 1 1/2 hours with machine guns. But they didn't open the door where the
suspects stayed and also didn't search the room from the staff.
Before things like that happen from time to time, but it's getting worse. Now they have no more Tourist,
so they rob the last Muzungus. For me it was last time Kenya. It's too dangerous and I hear it from many
Expats also. Some have enough too...
