When I was planning my first visit to Kenya and Mombasa I got a huge amount of information from this forum and two members, Fun And Sun & Noddy, were kind enough to respond to a couple of queries that I posted.
I believe in giving back as well as taking so wanted to post an account of my trip. At the same time I’m aware that most members are more experienced about this venue than I am and it would be presumptuous of me to offer advice so I’ve tried to just include the interesting bits and my opinions. I’ve put a fuller, more informational version on GGC if anyone is also a member on there.
Arriving outside the Kendas Arcade Hotel in Mtwapa was a déjà vu moment, after having viewed the facade on their website so many times, but what did surprise was the rather lacklustre reception arrangements; after all this was midday and the place should have been heaving.
The lack of a wardrobe, fridge, and AC didn’t trouble me, from my research this is the norm for accommodation in this price range (I was quoted 1400KSH for a single with breakfast) and it wasn’t until I was sitting in the adjoining open-air bar later on in the afternoon, enjoying a pot of tea, that the uncomfortable truth dawned, I’d checked into a hotel which was probably designed to cater to the short-time market! A notice over the passageway (Arcade?) leading to the rest of the hotel proudly proclaimed ‘this way to the accommodation and restaurant’, and the reason for the reception being un-(wo)manned during daylight hours suddenly became apparent. Being roused from my slumbers by a couple trying to get into my room with their key in the early hours of the morning did nothing to allay these suspicions. Never mind, I’d paid up front for two nights and I was determined to enjoy the experience.
The evening promised much; apart from the opportunity to visit the Casarina Disco, just a few minutes’ walk up the road, at night the hotel’s first-floor restaurant metamorphs into a VIP lap-dancing club and pole dancers and other entertainers perform in the bar. The bar and disco attracts a large clientele, mostly locals with a smattering of ex-pats and this is the main disadvantage of staying at the Arcade. The rooms are located around a central atrium and this method of construction funnels and amplifies the noise from the downstairs entertainment areas. As the disco continues until dawn this location won’t suit light sleepers.
The next day gave me the opportunity to really explore my surroundings. I suppose Mtwapa must be typical of many small African townships, a chaotic noisy maelstrom of humanity and traffic. The one tarmaced road is the main highway through the town, the rest are sandy tracks, all of these being lined with a jumbled succession of businesses, bars, and stalls. I had expected to be continually hustled but, perhaps because this is not really a tourist zone, I was treated exactly like the few other white ex-pats that were wandering around, that is accepted and ignored. The internet legends of the streets of Mtwapa being paved with women desperate for your stash are sadly untrue. There are lots of working girls wandering around during the day, these being easily distinguishable to a punter, and no doubt could be chatted up, but they are certainly too reserved to approach you. There is a supermarket not too far away for shopping for any necessities and this is a good place to change larger notes for the more useful 100’s and 500’s.
The public beach is a good venue to meet malayas but beyond walking distance, so if staying in Mtwapa one will need to befriend a moto taxi guy, they are parked at many of the busy intersections, however there is nothing to distinguish them from anyone else. Halfway to Bamburi I realised that my man had no wing mirrors, so maybe they don’t have licences or insurance either. The other cheap way to travel is the matatus, or minibus taxis, however these just seemed to go up and down the main road between Mombasa and Malindi so no use for venturing down the side roads. You can, though, get off at the Pirates sign and access the public beach from here.
Whilst strolling along the sands I came across the Bamburi Beach Resort, another venue that I’d studied on my computer screen. In fact after stopping for a drink in the bar and inspecting the rooms, I felt comfortable enough to book up for the following days. The price in August was 4500KHS per night (same price for one or two persons) and I couldn’t negotiate anything off this at all, so three times the price of the Kendas, however the beach location and the separate cottages in the grounds (so no need to parade anybody past reception) swung it for me. Mtwapa is really for ex-pats and on this occasion I was a holiday maker.
On reflection I think I might have been rather harsh in my judgment of the Kendas, it was reasonable value for money as accommodation is very expensive here, and the location in the centre of Mtwapa’s nightlife is superb. In fact, together with the Casarina, it is the nightlife, and there is a great advantage in just going upstairs after an convivial evening, or early morning, rather than having to start negotiations with a taxi driver for the journey home.
I can understand why the Bamburi Resort gets poor reviews on trip advisor as the standard of accommodation is a bit lower than the palaces on either side; however it does proudly proclaim that its room rates are lower than any other beach front location. The manager told me that they will only take reservations for a room but not a particular room; this of course is normal practice but a significant disappointment here, as the cottages are all individually located within the grounds as well as offering a choice of upstairs or ground floor accommodation. In fact the rustic dilapidation suited me perfectly, I am not a lover of identikit hotels, the only caveat I make is that, as I am not a gregarious person, I would have preferred a private veranda. There is no TV or room safe so you will need to sort out your own nighttime entertainment and ensure that you draw out enough funds to pay for this during office hours. However I am most disappointed to have to mention that, in all my years of travelling in various countries, this is the only venue where I have had anything stolen from my room. Actually it was quite a clever scam as, when a monkey suddenly appeared on my veranda rail, and just like any normal tourist would, I grabbed my camera and crept out, hoping not to frighten it away. In fact it just disdainfully ignored me until the photo was taken but, when I turned around, I found that its mate had taken the opportunity to filch a packet of biscuits from inside my room; the whole tribe then sat in the rafters and shared them out.
The place makes truly excellent lodgings for punters though this fact isn’t mentioned on their website. There is no reception as such, only an office which keeps normal office hours, guests are therefore expected to keep their room keys with them and so the only walk of shame at nighttimes is past the askari. These security men perform a vital function in keeping out unattached ladies and as there is a beach entrance and a road entrance it is quite possible to run multiple partners with no danger of inadvertent clashes. However it seems that the tales on the internet of girls flocking around here in the evening are also urban myths as, once darkness falls, the beach becomes deserted apart from a few tourists. One of the girls I that I chatted to told me that the police would round up stray unaccompanied girls and levy a ‘fine’, “Surely it’s ok after dark though?” I worriedly enquired, “No, the police then walk along in plain clothes” was the reply. The only place where this rule is not enforced is the public beach next to Pirates. How long this clampdown has been in force I don’t know, nor do I know if it is likely to be permanent, but I do seem fated to arrive at venues just after the good times have come to an end.
During my visit the new Kenyan constitution was proclaimed, an occasion for much rejoicing and allowing a national holiday to be declared and I took this opportunity to explore Mtwapa’s nightlife. There are several local bar/discos but the only names that I can remember are ‘The Bahnhof’ and ‘Palm Resort’as well as the (in)famous Casarina but my advice is to head straight for the latter. This is the only one to charge admission and so tends to be more exclusive. I found the other places to be packed to the extent of the girls being considerably outnumbered by the local lads, (obviously this disproportion may not be so apparent on normal days) whilst the Casarina was packed with girls (who are allowed in free) with the only local competitors those who could afford the entrance fee. The odds are therefore well stacked in the mzungas favour, furthermore the girls who come here are actively seeking a date with us, which may not necessarily be the case in the local bars.
Any mongering holiday sinks or swims on the quality of the girls and by this definition my trip was a resounding success. It could be argued that my two ‘wives’ and an afternoon ST hardly constitutes a representative sample but I did chat to many more girls, and the adjective that continually came to mind was sweet. Maybe it’s the African tradition of subservience to one’s menfolk, maybe its respect for an elder fatherly figure, or maybe it’s just about the money after all. Whatever the reason, the girls are desperate to capture a trophy muzunga, proud to be seen at his side, and anxious to hold on to him. They went along with whatever was wanted, ST or LT, but their choice was LT and well into the next day (and the next day and the next day!) The concept of doing a runner, or getting the early hour’s phone call, or having to go home to the baby, is happily still an alien concept here. It would have been impossible for me to penny pinch in the face of such real poverty so I paid the ISG suggested rates of 1000/2000KSH for ST/LT but I am 99% certain that even if I’d only paid either of my girls for a ST at night, she would have still automatically stayed till morning; apart from anything else, for a girl to travel home alone in the early hours would be inviting robbery of her earnings.
I won’t go into great detail on here about the girls performance, suffice to say I was literally overwhelmed by the porn-star performance both of the LT’s gave, beyond anything I’ve yet experienced.
I suppose it is inevitable to draw comparisons with Thailand as I have spent so much time there. It is said that a punter will always be drawn to the country where he first experienced his awakening, so to speak, so I guess I will always prefer my coffee milky rather than black and, to be honest, I prefer the reserved demeanor of the Thais rather than the in-your-face friendliness of the Africans. However the uninhibited enthusiastic attitude of my African Queens towards lovemaking was beyond comparison, I can now see the reasoning behind the saying ‘once you’ve had black you’ll never go back’. By lucky coincidence I live literally just across the North Sea from Schipol so, given a good connection, the door to door journey could be as little as twelve hours. Add to this the lack of jet lag, and Mombasa could easily be a destination for a long weekend and the idea of a holiday home somewhere on the coast doesn’t seem quite so fanciful after all.

Can't you all read properly ??
I'll leave you all with a final observation in this fruitless discussion :
Arguing on the internet is a bit like competing in the Special Olympics in that even though you may win the Gold Medal, you are still an Idiot in everyday life !

Mombasas pro pricing scheme is based on one factor: The factor is if the girl likes you or not.
If yes it could be free to pocket money, if not they they can refuse or just give you a non realistic price which will be very high.
I just back from mtwapa with two of my friends, thus guys are 28 and 31 years
old. both of them got ladies from casurina disco from free to 500. one of them got it for free. he is a good friend of mine.
They also used to collect phone number from the ladies at disco, then they called them during daytime. Also the best time to ladies to come with you is around 2:30AM. when no other option available.
We have a long discussions about that. they manage to transform the pro to a cat. I saw it myself.
For me i just got a few free babes during daytime. here is a video frame capture from my HD camcorder of a 182cm tall lady.

That mzungu andestand that normal Kenya salery for ONE MONTH. From 7000ksh to 10. 000kes. Kenya girl want this money for one night (why not). Not 10 procent of Kenya workers having +10. 000ksh/month.
The minimum salery in Kenya is 6000ksh for evry worker. Only if this worker having job. My brother. This salery is 2tot 3 euro/day (3to 5 dollar/day). Write not stupid text about 10. 000ksh/night. Make not competition about high prices.

This means let me get my leg over and in return I will provide you wilth a couple of chickens or a goat.
One understands that as a mazunga you will be paying more but not a mark up which equates to twenty times more than a Kenyan guy. There is one unspoken secret amongst all working girls around the world that the foreigner, tourist, mazunga is the cream on the cake and they must not know what the locals are in actual fact paying them.
So yes you are maybe right maybe we should not be all about sex and money. The next time you see her, talk the language of love and come prepared with a couple of chickens or a goat and see what she says.
The second way I work it out is more of in a mathematical way, believe it or not. Which I would gladly explain over a beer, while looking out for the local talent in some nearby den of iniquity!

Everyone on the rest of the forum seems to think the rate is 1000-3000 by so called hotties.Surely everyone must know that 5,000-10,000 is a western price and what an average Kenyan is earning per month working all hours compared to your working girl who is earning their equivalent in a few hours and sending her kids to private school. Which most of the population cannot afford to do.I am just in agreement with everyone else and I hope my thoughts can be seen as a constructive overview.

What we are talking about here are actual market prices, from the low to the high; I believe, whether any of these are fair is to be judged solely by the payee and the payer, not by any 3rd party.
We 3rd parties just note what's going on and either vote with our pocketbook or our feet.
