Posts: 364It would appear as if the prices at the Chester House have been increased recently.
At a $100 for a studio I am a bit reluctant to pull the trigger on that one...

Might Jamjam know of a similarly equipped hotel in Mombasa?

Posts: 3Short Trip: were to stay and were to go?
I will be for a week in Mombasa and most of the time working. So for the fun part I need to get oriented pretty fast. Some questions:
1. I can't bring girls back to my hotel. So I will need short time room or a cheap overnight room which I can rent at night if I find a girl. It seems Casablanka has short time room on the premisis. Any other places like that? Or any recomended short time hotels?
2. Which clubs/places do I go? I don't want to go out and dance. I want to go out, find a girl without much effort and then eat, drink and go back. Or go back straight away.
3. I like Pattaya Soi 6. Anything goes. Are there bars like Soi 6 in Mombasa?
4. After work I will stay some days on the beach. I was thinking of Kahama hotel. Is is girl friendly and in a good location, for beach & fun?
Thanks for your help!

Mtwapa is just too filthy and overcrowded for my taste.
Shanzu Beach (the plaza across the gate of Serena Beach hotel) is worth exploring. There is a newly built Kenda (very nice rooms and facilities, but 2, 500 overnight and 2, 000 ST, and they didn't ask for ID both times I've been there) which seems to have more staff than patrons until now.
Then there is Safari Inn: ST used to be 500, then they upped it to 1, 000 during Christmas and only reduced it to 750 afterwards. The rooms are clean and adequate (king size beds, fan and shower). Don't know their overnight rate but expect it to be 1, 500 or so. Their bar and restaurant ("Schweizer Kueche") seems always packed with local mzungus; lots of WG's hang out at the bar. There is a real funny sign out front the next door barber shop cum massage advertising "Deutscher Wertarbeit"!
A few doors down is Pistaccio (never been, but looks quite attractive) and another 2 or 3 inns with accomodations (forgot names) further toward the African Safari hotel properties.
The drawback for matatu users is that it's about. 2 miles off the Bamburi/Mtwapa road (but there are tuktuks aplenty). A bonus for people who drive themselves is that you will be let in by the gatemen at the Serena and all lesser hotels without questions (I'd imagine they are much more strict toward people on foot) so you can spend some quality time on a nice beach before or after "the deed".

The big problem with Big Tree these days is that it has become too expensive.
A small room with no net and cold salt water shower and no breakfast now costs 3000 kes. Really you would be much wiser to go to Mtwapa. There are many places there for less than 2000 with hot shower, good room and breakfast. You can get a matatu to Bamburi Beach for 20 shillings.
