In fact I only know one place where you can really swim at any time of the day and that is at the mouth of the Mtwapa Creek.

You can get there by going to the far left of the Cobacabana Beach. In fact you can take the shortcut to the left, immediately after where the road goes down steeply, a small road along a wall, where cars cannot pass.

Arrived at the beach you can leave your bag at one of the last beach bars there, if you take some drinks from them.

Then you walk to the left past some mangrove trees and there you will find a nice sandy beach, where at any time of the day you can find water deep enough for real swimming.

I used to go there from the Beach Bar, on the other side of the beach, but that one is unfortunately closed now.

When the tide is low, Big Tree is not a good place for swimming, because you will have to walk very far to reach only knee-deep water.

I found that nowadays a good place to swim at high tide is the Continental Resort in Shanzu.

They are having an area now right at the beach where you can use sunbeds for free, as long as you order some drinks. At high tide this beach is excellent for swimming as it is just a few meters to reach the deep water. At low tide you can still find some deeper spots to bathe, especially in the sandy spots, but if you float or swim you will feel the massage at your back from the seagrass.

At the other far end of Cobacanana Beach, so at the far right side you will find a very cool place to have a drink, the Crab's Den. It is possible to swim there as well, but you will have to walk a bit in the mud.

A bit outside Mtwapa, in Kikambala you will find the Las Palmas beach bar. Good for swimming at high tide and they serve very good grilled fish, the catch of the day from the local fishermen.

In fact the best (and cheapest) grilled fish used to be served by Martin in the Beach Bar in Maweni, but as I stated before, that place is closed now.
