After extensive research on this forum I booked my flights to Mombasa and booked in at the Jambo Travellers in Mtwapa.


I had signed up to Afro Introduction dating site and had been messaging a few girls before my arrival.

LOL. I dragged around the top model leatherman for years. I never used it. Regular mail is no good in Africa where they steal the stamps from the letter. Make sure any letter is stamped in front of you. Then the stamps are properly invalidated. If you want something sent to you there is only DHL and EMS. In Kenya also UPS. And its very expensive. Then again. What you really need? I carry a swiss knife around and used that 5 times in a couple of years. Bring a 100 quality condoms and suntan lotion. Everything else you can find.

I learned that too cheap is expensive in Africa. I ordered a cappuccino machine from the states through Kentex cargo and got it. Ordered something from China through DHL and got that. Sent something through Kenya post got burned.

You're right I don't "need" a leatherman but I'm a Amercan. I feel naked without a gun and I never used mine in America. It's part of American cowboy culture Yee hah! LOL.

I do use a leatherman a lot to fix things. I broke some headphones and I taped them using duct tape (I know they have it here but I don't see it in the stores).

Back to the topic. I'm going to take a year to see what I actually need then I'm going to bounce around the continent.

Hmm. You have to ease your way into Africa because If I did stay in mombasa it would be Nyali because of the mall. I liked the Diani Beach area too. I was in MBA last year and it seemed like home fiber was only in Nyali. I stayed in an Airbnb in bamburi and it was loud. But my main problem with MBA is the humidity coming from Nai is a huge difference, I remember seeing a camel chill out in the shade That was the funniest thing I saw.

I think I need more time and money because I miss little things. I mailed my knives multitools to Kenya using Kenya post and they straight stole most of it. I wasn't that expensive but I'm used to having a knife on me and they fucking nicked them. I did buy a overpriced leatherman at the mall in Nairobi but I hate having to order shit and waiting two months to get it.

But I think it's growing pains that everyone who comes to Africa has to go through, If there was thing great offline Monger community I would be futher along.

IMHO Kenya. I do like Uganda a lot. But a major budget item is accommodation. And in Mtwapa there is loads of brand new apartments going up. 200 usd gets you a decent brand new 2 BR. But the most upscale area is Nyali. But I don't like it. You need transportation anywhere to go. And IMHO its not Africa. Just another boring residential area with some boring shopping malls.Always rent unfurnished and furnish yourself. Another aspect is connectivity. Loads of flights even from Mombasa now. Quatar Turkish Ethiopian all fly direct to MBA and you can connect pretty much everywhere. Very good private hospitals like Mombasa hospital and Aga Khan. Lightning fast 4G. The only issue is food. Most restaurants are way too expensive for the quality they offer. But if you're able to throw a steak on a grill and cook yourself you're all set.

I do like Uganda for the climate and chicas. There is two caveats though. Pollution and congestion in Kampala. And surprisingly crime. Murders are up big time in Kampala. And when I was checking on housing it was way more expensive too. Kenya has its issues politically. But by and large its stable. Uganda the big question mark will be when Museveni departs. Nobody knows if it remains stable. But I can always jump on a regional flight. But IMHO as a base Kenya is hard to beat.
I know some consider Mtwapa as a dump. but. you need to have some kind of social life and there is some great widely travelled expat mongers hanging out there. Great fun.

Exactly. Some guy has a lot of fun, cost him 350, by kenyan standards a lot buy UK not so much. You can not spoil the market in mombasa as there are not enough mongers and too many girls. I stick to 2 k and always short time myself.

Agreed there has been a fall off (that will probably pick up shortly) of tourism in Mombasa There's no jobs and it's only going to get worse now that the SGR has taken jobs, There's just too many girls especially on the low end to spoil the market. I am a veteran of Ghana, Uganda, and Kenya. David don't for a minute feel what you did is wrong IMHO. That type of experience you had will last you a lifetime over scores of meaningless mundane cheap sessions with random girls again IMHO.
