I was in Shanghai just 5 months ago and brought two Girlfriends into the City hotel and they stayed over, no problem. I remember 10 years ago, the night managers used to walk around all the floors at 11pm looking and listening for girls in the rooms. Is it coming back to this?

Is it possible to to check a girlfriend into the hotels by registering 2 people? Are they checking rooms closely again?

If you don't remember to ask for 2 keys from the start, all you have to do is say you lost your key and get a replacement. If it is a credit card style (magnetic strip) it will not cost you anything at the better chains and your old card will not work.

Anywhy it is good to have a couple cards when you travel simply so you don't have to leave anything important in the power slot.

Here's what I am doing as far as keys are concerned. During Check-In I will already ask for 2 room keys. If this does not work, I usually tell them I had left it at my desk in the office and need a replacement.

Also as I usually stay in the same hotel whenever I travel to a particular city, I will keep the room key when checking out. This will give you a second key card and you don't have to ask for 2 keys next time you check in - better yet, the card you give to the girl will not be actually usable to open the door to your room. Just in case she "accidently" takes it with her.

Anyways what still works best for me is just to walk in without paying to much notice to the security - just as if you'd own the damn place....

70 Euros would be a little over 700 RMB, so that's not a terrible price for all night. You could probably do a little better, but not by too much depending on the time.

But on the hotel issue: if it was after 11pm, the hotels have been more tight about keeping out guests. AG reports that this is due to a police memorandum to hotels to keep the hookers out after 11pm. (Not the way they worded it apparently, but that's the intent.)

Your hotel could still be girl unfriendly. AG has a suggestion that might work: Ask the hotel reception for a new key. Tell them you misplaced yours. Keep the old one, and when you bring in a girl have her show "her" key to security. (Be sure to get it back!) Alternatively, tell security you are going to the bar.

I have not tried either yet, but I am preparing to do so on this trip. I have noticed my hotel's evening security is significantly tighter than it was 3 months ago.

For those that know it, Xuanhua lu (runs between Jiangsu Lu and Dingxi Lu with a variety of BBS with different levels of service on offer) was pretty much all closed down last week, however good news is that it is back to normal. So we tried „Waves“ for the first time today. Not exactly easy to find, as you don’t see it from the street. You have to walk into a little side street for 100 yards and will then find it to your right. There is a small car parking lot in front of the building.

The routine is similar to the other sauna places, but not exactly the same. The folks looked kind of surprised when I sat down at the sofa close to the reception to get rid of my shoes. With some wild gestures they tried to make me understand that this step happens only in the locker room – whatever. My “standard place” at Hongmei Lu requires the shoes to be taken of next to the reception.

Undressing and showering is pretty much the same, except that I like the facilities better at Hongmei Lu (Da Tang Yu Jing, 3125 Hong Mei Road) and also at Skyline Sauna. There were plenty of attendants there, but most of them rather standing around and not very helpful. No extras were offered to me in the shower area, that didn’t bother me as I know what I can do there and was not in the mood for pool or Sauna or scrub anyways. However, new fellows may be a bit lost there.

After toweling and dressing I was led upstairs and brought to the relaxation are with the Comfy chairs. The chairs are arranged in two rows facing each other. I was sitting opposite to 3 Japanese that were constantly zapping thru the channels. I actually prefer my private room, which I get offered by default in both DTYJ and Skyline.

After sitting around for about 10 minutes with some Xi Gua and drink, I was asked to go to the “masaji”. A pleasant surprise was the line up, consisting of at least 10 girls. I chose one with a nice smile, some of them looked like they are in absolutely no mood…..
