It all depends on your life style! You can stay in a hotel like ML for $450 a month or a hostal for $150 a month. If you eat once a day Menu it will cost you $65 a month for food. Beers in a bar are about 6 soles and a daily cappucino is about the same. Do the math!

    My lima report Pt.1

I had a great trip to Peru this month and met some old friends and some new ex-pats as well. The ex-pat community down there is pretty close knit and as most are wanderers, they readily welcome those of us who are dropping by or passing thru. Last trip the weather was still miserable, but this time it was perfect the whole trip. I generally stay in Miraflores in the summer as I do not deal well with the heat and like to have the near constant breeze.

My last trip down, I had come down to visit a buddy and do some restauranting, mongering and gambling. This time I had planned to do some sightseeing and get to the beach for a few days. I had met LB the first time thru a local group that was meeting at the “Corner Café” a local gringo owned watering hole. He invited my buddy and me over to an Ex-pats house for what turned out to be a wild party (by my standards).

The party was really top notch. J’s apartment is a penthouse and the top floor was done up in a red, white and blue tent. There was an assorted cast of about 50characters including ex-pats, neighbors four or five girls from “Tequilas” various girls from a local model agency, but my favorite had to be Barbara “The beer drinking Nun”. She was a 60 y/o missionary who had worked in India for many years and now runs an orphanage in Peru. Growing up I had spent too many years in a Catholic school and this was the first time a Nun kissed me square on the lips. They had a DJ, Peruvian buffet and a Peruvian band and it proceeded to get pretty wild. I was having a great time and meeting some great people but I kept noticing small groups leaving and coming back. Obviously being in Peru, I could figure it out but I was more interested in the girls anyway. As the party got late the younger Peruvian guys had already grabbed the models and headed out to the clubs. This left me with the more conservative types who stayed at the penthouse while the rest of the party moved into J’s other apartment several floors down. After awhile my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to head down. When I got down there I was pretty surprised to see a group scene going on. It consisted of girls giving body shots and other substances being inhaled off of various body parts. Down the hall one guy was taping the action and told me to join in. It was here that I first encountered “Amazing Grace” purported to be one of Limas BJ queens. She was pretty wrecked at the time and was actually getting it in both holes as I walked in. I proceeded to watch for a few minutes when camera guy again told me to join in. In the interests of not getting to graphic, I will leave the rest to your imagination.

The only reason I tell that story is that was my first introduction to LB and how I ended up renting his apartment (I will post my impressions at a later date in the hotel section).

Day 1- Took the red-eye from Miami and arrived at 6:30 AM. No problems clearing customs (green light) and my driver (Manuel a recommendation from several sources) was waiting as I exited. It was too early to check in to my apartment, so I left my bag with the doorman and walked over to Café Z to see if any of the locals were around.

Obviously it was still too early so I had coffee and breakfast while I flirted with the waitresses. I am sure it is the same over most of South America, there is always a Café that seems to draw a strange but interesting crowd. (Once properly introduced the regulars let you know who is rumored to be CIA/DEA/Narco Trafficker’s, weapons smugglers and the occasional semi- retired Mossad hit man.) It is the type of place where urban legend’s begin and has enough characters for a great spy novel. Well when in Lima “Café Z” and it’s” Dueno” Charles, is that place.

Finally around 10 a few of the regulars arrived and I had a chance to catch up on the local gossip. They were all worried about the “Fujimori” mess and the real possibility that most of SA was going left. To top it off there appears to be a Fascist that is moving up in the polls and everyone is concerned with the repatriation of property. The general consensus was that while “Fujimori” was no saint, he is clearly more palatable then Humala.

Went over to the apartment around 11:30 and LB and his maid were waiting. “M” unpacked my bag and I went up to the terrace to catch some ray’s while LB prepared us lunch. After a great “Osso Buco” and two bottles of “Occucaje” I retired to the bedroom. I think it was a combination of sun and wine, but within minutes of lying down, I was fast asleep. I finally awoke about 6 pm to an empty apartment .I showered and dressed and fixed myself a drink before heading out to dinner. It was such a beautiful night that I decided to try Vivaldino’s down in LarcoMar (see restaurant section). As a general rule of thumb I do not take girls out to dinner on a first date. I find an intimate dinner inevitably lends itself to more intimacy and I want to know there is certain chemistry there first. Tonight was to be no exception. I had made plans to meet a few friends down at “O” bar and after dinner I had another drink down at Lounge “Zuka”.

For anyone who has not been there like “Calles de Pizza’s” LarcoMar is a higher end tourist trap. Downstairs they have a pool hall, bowling alley and 12 screen theatre. The main level is more or less a food court consisting of Burger king type places, Pardo’s chicken, dunkin doughnuts and one high end Argentine steak house as well as a Hooters and a Sushi Place. Upstairs has a Tony Roma’s, Chinese restaurant and of course Vivaldino’s. One of my favorite stores has to be Alpaca 111. If you are into fine clothes and do not already have a baby alpaca sweater, scarf and the “Ultimate Luxury” a baby alpaca full length dress coat, you need to get there pronto! Go into Nieman Marcus or Saks and try to find one for under $1500.00. I met one guy who finances his mongering trips down here by bringing back sweaters and scarves for friends, family and co-workers. However with the new luggage restrictions it is probably not that profitable now.

Most of the bars and disco’s in Larcomar draw a young crowd and “Zuka” is no exception. Other than the eye candy you see but can’t touch, there is nothing much there. Tonight, I happened to run into a beautiful model type who was sipping a Martini at one of the banquettes. We made eye contact and I motioned her over.

She was about 5’8 with beautiful eyes and extremely short brown hair. I fumbled around with my Spanish for a few minutes before she told me that she spoke English. I ended up buying her a martini and she told me she was leaving for Paris in two weeks to finish up her last semester in college. It was a few minutes later when it dawned on me she was speaking about high school not University. Sheepishly I asked her how old she was and she proceeded to tell me she was 17 and the DJ’s girlfriend. Totally embarrassed I told her I had to meet friends, paid the bill and left.

Now “O” bar is very high end and brings in an older crowd. I have never met anyone who has gotten lucky there although it usually has some great ladies. Needless to say that after a few hours of striking out it was time to move on. We grabbed a cab over to La Cubata bar on San Martin and had a few drinks and a huge platter of cured Cuban ham. Marcello, the owner is a great guy, but other than the barmaid there were no girls to be seen. Now it was about 2:30 and a couple of pilots in our group were itching to head down to “Tequilas”.

When we got down there the place was jamming. I would say probably 40-50 girls and maybe 25 guys. While the pilots went right for the “Pro’s” I sat at a table and had a whiskey while trying to figure out the deal on the dance floor. I initially spied Geraldine dancing with another girl and immediately could not take my eyes off of her. I waited until she and her girlfriend came out of the ladies room and started talking to a group of girls before I approached her. Up close she was an absolute stunner, 5’8”, long brown hair and an amazing body. We danced a bit and then I invited her over to a booth for a drink. I was impressed when she only wanted a juice. Although she was timid at first and clearly was not a “Pro” we had a great time.

She ended up being a real GFE and even though we agreed on $70.00 for two hours, she ended up staying till about 11 am.

Day 2 – I woke up about 9am and had another wonderful session with Geraldine (I hate that name). Afterwards we showered and she set the table on the terrace while I prepared breakfast. As per my request LB’s refrigerator was stocked with eggs, bacon, and fresh ground Peruvian coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. Sometimes it is hard with a semi-pro not to mix business with pleasure but after last night and this morning, I had not had enough of her. She told me she generally only goes to Tequilas around holidays when she needs some extra money. I told her I would give her $150 a day plus expenses if she would come with me to Paracas for a few days. She would have to take off from work Saturday, but did not think it would be a problem.

At about 12pm I put her in a taxi back to Callao and I picked up the car rental and went over to Jockey Plaza to get some things for our trip. When renting a car in Peru you should try to get dark colored SUV or Peugeot sedan. You will be amazed how many times the police will wave you through checkpoints. I was able to pick up a nice baby doll outfit and some candles in Saga Falabella and then hopped over to Plaza Vea to pick up some strawberries, champagne and cheeses. I then headed back to apartment to try and get a little sun in anticipation of our trip. Warning, although it is not hot in Miraflores due to the cold breezes from the Humboldt Current, the sun can be quite strong. The original plan was for “G” to meet me at the apartment at 9am the following morning so we could get a full day in and arrive in Paracas before night fall.

I fell asleep on one of the Chaise lounges for a few hours and then showered and got dressed for dinner. In the past I had used LatinAmericanCupid when it was a free site. I came across two other free sites recently and had met one particularly hot chica which I was scheduled to meet in front of a Pena in Barranco at 11pm.

This night I was taking LB and his wife to Tratorria Mambrino’s for dinner. We had cocktails and a nice carpaccio and their great flat bread for an appetizer, I followed that with a filet of pork with sweet potato ravioli and two carafes of the house wine. After dinner we said goodbye and I headed over to the Marriott to check out the new casino.

The new casino is about 3x the size as the old one but now has a shitload of slots. They do have poker now, mini baccarat and about 6 blackjack tables either $3 or $5. On the downside they only have 1 crap table with like a $200 limit and they turned the bar where some chicas used to hang out into a Sushi restaurant. The upside is they now have a VIP room with $25 blackjack and better service.

I guess I was in there for about an hour when I started feeling a little faint. I had the sense to cash in my losings before heading to mens room. Once inside I proceeded to get violently ill very quickly. If you have ever been seriously ill in a foreign country you understand the feeling of panic one has lying on the floor in a public restroom with close to a grand in your pocket. I took out the cell phone LB had given me for the trip and swore I would buy an unlocked 4band before I ever left the states again. Unfortunately, NO Freaking Signal , I waited about 10 min until I had the strength to walk outside and as soon as the big Amazon female security guard saw me, she ran over to help. I don’t know what she was saying but I was not getting into a taxi like this. As I leaned against her I grabbed the cell phone and called LB and then went back to the bathroom to wait.

Luckily they were a few blocks away at a friend’s house and LB and the Mrs. were there in a flash. They wanted to take me to their Clinic but I declined and went to the apartment instead.

    Day 3
I guess you figured it out by now that I never called the Chica I was to meet last night. After I got home I spent the next 12 hours sweating and projectile vomiting into a bucket on LB’s terrace. LB came over to check on me at about 7 am and made me some tea. Promptly at 9am the doorman buzzed up to announce Geraldine was in the lobby. I was in no condition to see her, so I gave LB $200 and told him to apologize and send her away with the promise I would make it up to her.

I spent the next two day’s sleeping with periodic visits by Mrs. LB stopping by to make me tea, fresh squeezed juice and homemade chicken soup.

When choosing a hotel avoid places that have flimsy doors and locks like the ML. I know "Everybody loves the ML" but I walk in and out with and without chicas and I rarely get questioned and I can get into anybody's room I want in under 10 sec's with a paper clip! You are right as always!

    David33,
Once again I stand corrected. I was killing time last night as I was waiting for a bartender to get off work. It was a Wednesday night and I ended up sitting in Parque Kennedy by myself from 2-5 in the morning sin incident. I actually probably never felt that safe the whole time I lived in NYC. When I was writing, I was thinking about JC's room at the ML getting ripped off,Shamus having his camera stolen and to top it off both Shamus & Jakester who were both here recently, mysteriously disappearing never to be heard from again!

But on the bright side, finally about 6am this morning I was buck naked on my 16th floor terrace happly banging this little cutie as I watched the sun rise and she hung over the edge fearing for dear life. As most chica's down here have never been in a highrise, I find they are more than eager for the experience!

    Bueno Suerte All!

My gf always watches the news and told me that happens quite often. Kidnapping on a smaller scale, they take you from ATM to ATM untill your card maxes out.
Like Nibu once mentioned criminality is on the rise in Lima. The gambista's at the McDonalds in Miraflores were held up at night not too long ago.

    It's X-mas time, here's your gift.

Miraflores is an upscale area of Lima. It's about 20-25 minutes from the airport. Taxi will cost you 30-35 Peruvian soles (approx. $10USD). Since it's your 1st time and it'll be late, have your hotel address handy to pass along to one of official taxi guides.

Safety-wise, Miraflores is pretty safe, just be smart. A friend of mine recently got too comfortable, let his guard down, met an English-speaking Peruvian in Parque Kennedy who ended up setting him up with some corrupt police, and taking him on a millionaire run of ATMs in Lince and San Isidro. We both blame him for being so stupid. He knows better than that. I have no idea whether this is common in Lima, but it apparently does happen. I've never had a problem, personally, at any time of the day or night.

Nope, no water throwing here (except at carnaval time). Here at midnight, they throw coins (of VERY SMALL denomination) over their shoulders and out the door with their backs to the outside.

my ex is cubana. they do the same thing. always with the yellow undies. and it has to be a new pair each year. can't be the same as last years model.
also with the grapes, but minus the suitcase.
they get a bucket of water and throw out the front door at midnight, cleansing the house and chasing out all bad "spirits."
i've been in other latin countries over new years and seen them do the same.
is it practiced in peru as well?

You know this thread has 108 pages.
It's just a hunch, but I bet you'll find answers to those questions and dozens more that you haven't even thought about. You'll be amazed at what you'll find.

    Have a good time
