Posts: 1194The Canadian Dollar (Loonie) Will Eclipse the American Peso Soon Enough
Given the US government's success at devaluing the greenback (e.g. when W took office $1 bought 1.2 Euros, now a Euro costs a $1.30) , don't be surprised if the loonie replaces the greenback as currency of choice in Latin America. OK this is a bit of hyperbole, but monetary policy has NOT been this administrations' strongsuit (what is?) and things ARE getting more expensive. Colombia and Brasil are the two most conspicuous examples, but your $ that bought 3.8 Reals when Dumbo moved into the White House now buys 2.2 Reals, and Brasil is run by a leftist trade union leader (Ignacio da Silva AKA Lula)!
LB: In all my wild experiences one of the sketchiest was outside Trujillo on my recent trip. Gotta post that report tonight.Last edited by Surfer; 11-08-05 at 22:01. Reason: Omitted Part

Posts: 1233Wow, Surfer and David33 are you sure you guys aren't spooks? Apartheid, Sendero bombings, My only war stories have to do with a few bad LSD trips and something to do with streaking, but I can't recall it now. All joking aside, you guy's have obviously seen some s**t.
Surfer, Although it has probably had several variations since and your quote is the post 9/11 version, I think it was originally Ben Franklin who said
"Those who are willing to sacrifice their basic liberties to assure their security deserve neither".
I heard tonight that "Fuji" was released. It was definetly the talk of the cafes tonight.
I find it refreshing to talk about something other than getting laid in Lima......
Now that David33 informed me we can run for public office at the municipal level, I was hoping we might be able to put together the "gringo party" down here.

Posts: 1194Wait Just A Minute Before Endorsing a Corrupt Fascist David
I was in Peru during Guzman's reign of terror too, though was not affected the way you were. And while I was no friend of Alan Garcia or his leftist cronies, before you endorse Fujimori, let us recite a few aspects of his reign:
1. Vladimir Montesinos
2. MANY Intis/Soles missing from public coffers (all the "evidence" that is necessary to convict on corruption charges given his responsibility as President)
3. Imposition of Martial Law and suspension of civil liberties used as pretext to intimidate/kill political opponents.
Like his neighbor to the South Pinochet, Fujimori was a corrupt tyrant with no respect for the rule of law. Yes Sendero (and Tupac Amaru) were violent, good for nothing terrorist groups help bent on mayhem, but just as the Bush administration has used 9/11 as a pretext for the rollback of civil liberties in ways completely unrelated to the all encompassing "war against terrorism", your boy Fuji used the terrorist groups as a effective excuse to impose his totalitarian ideas of government upon Peru.
Totalitarianism IS effective at maintaining "order", as I saw firsthand during my time in apartheid era South Africa, but the PRICE to be paid for that order is one no civilized nation should be forced to pay. I am embarrassed to admit I cannot recall who uttered this truism about the Iraq War, but the logic is unassailable: "Those who sacrifice liberty for security will soon have neither."
I DO agree that Latin American politics are quite fascinating (case study in BAD governance only exceeded by Africa).
Sorry mongers. I will post sex pictures taken in Peru (later tonight) to redeem my sin of talking politics.

David,
Hey I tried to stick to the forum for everything. The hotel maria luisa was a godsend to me or else I would have had to pay alot more someplace else. I hung out with jamie one night and I feel really bad what happened to him. I have a method where I lock my suitcase and chain it to something that cant be moved or something very heavy. The way I look at it if they are going to rip my suitcase open I was a marked man anway but the lock I'm hoping would keep out curious cats.
I know I shouldnt have paid $50 for that girl and I deserve to get beaten in public for it for all the forum to witness but I was just tired of putting so much effort into it and wanted fast pussy. She was a very average looking girl which to me usually translates into hard working over achiever but in this case it was left at face value. Average. I mean if she freaks out with cum on MY sheets she might need to look into a different proffession.
I have to disagree with using ormeno bus line. I used it twice this trip one time they were a half hour late the next time an hour and a half late, which added on to a 13 hour journey makes it even harder. Cruz del sur I heard is good too.
I got to meet a few of the mongers on the board. Some by chance and enjoyed the conversations that we had. It was good to meet all of you. I will be moving on to the tijuana or DR forum since thats my next move. I will also join the forum with a membership.
Good luck to all.

Posts: 3074Well, continuing to bore the mongers reading this forum and looking for sex, not politics....the Peruvian Govt. has no real evidence against Fujimori. And as one who had his windows blown out twice by sendero luminoso bombs as well as having had personal encounters with the terrorist group, I, like many Peruvians, have a warm spot in my heart for "mi Fuji". Time will tell as to what will happen to him, but he isn´t stupid and has a lot of videos of a lot of important people. This is another reason why living in Peru is so interesting...the political arena is nothing if not "folckorico". Never a boring moment here.

Posts: 142The reason why he was arrested cambe because there was preasure from the Chilean political parties. Here is the version from La Republica:
"El arresto se consumó luego de la fuerte presión que los partidos políticos chilenos, incluida la alianza oficialista de la Concertación, ejercieron sobre el gobierno de Ricardo Lagos.
Criticaron fuertemente que las autoridades permitieran el ingreso de Fujimori y le dieran visa de turista, no obstante que es público que éste es buscado por la justicia peruana por graves delitos."

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was arrested early Monday, hours after he defied an international arrest warrant and flew from Japan to Chile, police said. Shortly after Fujimori's presence in Chile was confirmed Sunday, the Peruvian government asked Santiago to arrest him while a request for his extradition was filed.
Police arrested the 67-year-old at his hotel early Monday.
Local media said lawyers for the former Peruvian leader were already appealing the arrest, which had been requested by the Peruvian government as a first step to seek his extradition.
Fujimori, who fled Peru in 2000 amid a growing scandal affecting his decade-long regime, faces 21 charges in Peru stemming from alleged corruption and his alleged support of a paramilitary death squad.
He resigned the presidency in a fax sent from Tokyo.
Fujimori arrived in Chile with four people. One of them, Luis Silva, said before the arrest that the former president was planning to hold a news conference here to explain his plans.
Silva gave reporters a brief communique on behalf of Fujimori that said: ''It is my purpose to remain temporarily in Chile, as part of the process for my return to Peru'' to run for president in the election set for April, 2006.
The Peruvian Congress, however, passed a resolution banning him from holding public office until February 2011.
Peruvian authorities have sought Fujimori's extradition for five years, but the Japanese government said he cannot be extradited because he has been granted Japanese citizenship. Fujimori is the son of Japanese immigrants to Peru.
Chilean officials appeared surprised by Fujimori's arrival at a time of tension with Peru over sea boundaries. Legislation passed Thursday by Peru could lead to it claiming Pacific waters now under Chilean control. The area is rich in fishing resources.

Actually he is under arrest in Chile now. I heard he travelled to Texas and Mexico and do not understand how he did not get arrested in the USA?
Art, I thought your report was honest and to be sure Lima is not everyones cup of tea. Most of us (expats and frequent visiters) are not into the Calle Pizza scene. On top of that you hit it after the bust and this past weekend was the new curfew with all the police and camera crews around.
I was out Sat about 8 and noticed most of the regulars were not around. However I saw 4 absoultly stunning 18-19 y/o models, one was black working who I never saw before. My wife and I went into The Flying dog and within 10 minutes they were all there as well. They lasted about 10 min with the young Aussie crowd that frequents the place and I am sure they were getting $50 bucks. On Friday there was a lone stunner walking up and down Larco that everybody was watching but nobody approached as I am sure she was looking for a Peruvian sugar daddy. She was wearing a expensive Diesel outfit and in NYC would easily pull down a 1k a hour.
As far as southern Peru is concerned it is mostly "Moonscape" between Lima and Chile. While Chincha enjoys a reputation for its "Black girls" ,Pisco has no redeeming qualities what so ever! The college town of Ica and nearby Oasis Haucachina, provide more interesting opportunities for the monger and sightseer.
BUS TRAVEL- I would not reccomend anybody travel by bus in Peru. If you must than always go first class with Cruz del sur or Ormeno's.
LeParticular,
Leave your Loonie's and travellers checques at home as they are completly worthless here. Everybody and I mean Everybody uses a Atm card here. The four digit Pin is a must! If you bring cash it must be dollars or euro's and only clean, unripped bills will be accepted.
Chica Prices!! $50 is a normal price for tourists in Tequilas, with the well known Placere's types as well. Emanualles chica's get $100. Street h***s take whatever they can get but $15-20 is more the norm. If you are goodlooking,in shape and talk the talk, you can get Tequila girls for $30 and sometimes for free if they know you and had a good experience. The brothels run the gamut from about $4-15 with Cucaradas on the high end.
Calle Pizza update!!!
Week nights curfew is 1am, 2am on weekends. Alot of the bars are ignoring the curfew and getting $1000 fines. There is a movement underfoot to apply this thruout Miraflores.
Bueno Suerte Todo,
LB

I haven't been to peru yet and I'll be there soon and I hope I have a happier report here but I will no doubt share a bad one as well. So thanks for sharing your true feelings.
I've heard that Peru needs a little more work than DR or Brazil but I've also heard that $50/hr is way too much.

Not bad at all considering what the worst alternative could be (sort of an insurance policy if you wanna think about it that way). I've asked her repeatedly if she was sure, since I never really tried that and usually carry travellers cheque and or my visa card along with cash. But she assured me a number of times.
For the life of me, I just can't see or believe that I can use my regular ATM with as limited cash as I'm willing to put in my account before coming there as the norm. So this time I'll take the precaution of carrying my trusty travellers cheques and cash just incase this ATM experiment doesn't work out. But I'll surely test it while I'm there.
P.S. I use RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) and she repeated a few times to make sure that my pin number is only 4 numbers long. Apparently one won't be allowed to use the card if the pin is longer than that.
