Buy either Claro or Movie Star most Peruvians in Lima seem to have Claro.

Most Peruvians in the out lying towns e. G. Iquitos, Cusco etc seem to have Movie Star.

The service offered and the coverage and purchase prices are about the same.

The difference being it is cheaper to call Claro to Claro or Movie Star to Movie Star than Claro to Movie Star or Movie Star to Claro

So.

If you intend to stay in only Lima buy Claro

If you intend to travel around Peru buy a Movie Star

Cost for a decent phone (Noikia) starts at $USD39. Or. S/109.

But with that you get $USD39 of free credits for both Claro and Movie Star.

So what did the phone really cost you?

The phones at the Airport cost $USD10 per day plus call costs.

So the maths says if you are staying in Peru longer than 2 days buy one.

You can use it to store chicas numbers and details.

You can contact them at a heart beat when the need or your dick arises.

Another good thing about having a phone is SECURITY.

If you get lost or end up somewhere you should not be.

Or get into a bad situation.

You can call one one the local guys down here for assistance you.

Especially if your spanish is not up to scratch.

You can also email your cell number to someone at home incase something happens there while you are away so they can contact you in an emergency.

The country code for Peru is 51 and the area code for Lima is 1

So to call your number from overseas they need to dial.

00 51 1 (your number)

A couple of points should be made.

1. Most phones are not unlocked (although for a price, they can be)

2. If you have a unlocked phone you can buy a chip for S/30

3. If you buy a (Claro) phone here you can only call another Claro phone, not a cab,restaurant, landline or girl or service that is not Claro. Same with other companies.

4. Your chip will usually expire in 60-90 days without use and next trip you will buy another phone or new chip.

5. Most apt geared for mongers include a free cell phone in the rental.

6. Activation can be 12-24hrs depending on system traffic.

7. They make nice presents for your GF, as they appreciate your unused minutes.

I have to learn how to move posts from one thread to another. Yes, it is that easy to buy a phone..will take you just a few minutes. They are unlocked and thus can be used in any country where you can purchase sim chips.

This shouldn´t be on the photo thread, but I will comment on the previous post. To all those who read this forum. I will repeat once again: DO NOT RENT A PHONE AT THE AIRPORT!!! Just go to any Claro stand in any large dept. store or even grocery store or go to the Claro shop on Larco and just BUY A PHONE! A phone with prepaid line will cost you as little as $30. They will give you the value of the phone in minutes. If you are an experienced monger and traveler you will already have an unlocked phone and just buy your sim chip in whichever country you are visiting (in the Claro store on Larco a chip will cost you less than $5...remember to bring your passport). If you are just beginning your mongering career like the previous poster, I would recommend spending an extra $20 or $30 and purchasing a GSM phone which will work in any country. That way you will be able to use your Peruvian phone any place you go where a chip can be purchased, i.e. LOS, P.I., Jak., etc. etc.

Not sure if you remember me last time I was there you were sick , in mid Nov, could not contact you. Anyway, I am on my way back mid april for a wedding. Great tip on the phone I was planning to rent one.

Also, not sure if you can hook me up this time. I also have very little time. I have been browsing Perutops and making a list. But I am sure you know better.

Yea I guessed it would be a little harder with the holiday but work said take the week off or lose the days. Actually, the real purpose is to see M. Piccu. That gives me 5 of the 7 wonders of the world. Have done 25 countries so far but this is first solo and first for mongering. No not married.

Plans so far In on Sat 10 pm. Stay at airport and book morning flt to Cusco and stay Sun. Through wed morning then back to Lima 4 the relaxation! Leaving Sat. Night. David if you could help out a fellow with an idea of an apt. That will except multiple visitors? Close to Miraflores and maybe 40-50 usd per night? Will pick up a phone in Lima. Seems you can get one at the airport.
