Wow, there's much less in most Isaan towns! I'd say Khon Kaen is a clear third best after Udon Thani and Korat in Isaan, or perhaps even #2 with Korat third, depending on your preferences. Of course anywhere you go in Isaan outside of Udon Thani the scene is very Thai-style (bad service, reasonably good looks).

Did you make it to the little sois of 500-800 baht houses? I don't recommend them, but they're there. And by 'MPs', did you mean Soapies? The three main Soapies of Khon Kaen - Kosa, Villa, Caesar - really are not bad as far as these types of places go. The freelancer scene around the bus station used to have a few gems, but lately nothing great.

It is quite comparable to Korat, where you have low end freelancers in that sort of park downtown, higher end on a street near there in front of that hotel (forget the name, near Ginza), and several pretty good Soapies around town.
