I use my UK number, and I don't speak Spanish! Use translator.

T-mobile has crappy but cheap international roaming, Sprint the same. Just buy the Three UK SIm from Amazon, its cheaper and easier than local colombian SIMs.

My opinion, unless you're going to be doing a lot of traveling outside of the major cities, there's no significant difference. Some smaller cities have better coverage by one carrier or another.

I know most girls are using Whatsapp and it is free. But there are a few that will not have Whatsapp.

I doubt it will be a problem. I can't even remember the last time I met a girl outside the USA who did not have whatsapp. It was years ago. The only people who don't have whatsapp are people in the USA. If a girl in Colombia tells you she doesn't have whatsapp, she is likely not telling you the truth for some reason.

Time for a new phone. I mostly text. Google fi sounds great for me to use but how hard is it for the girls to text me? What are their costs using normal carriers such as Claro, Moviestar, Tigo? Will their texts get to my phone? Is a text message to my Google fi a normal cost, maybe a little bit more, or is it a high cost for them?

Been using this SIM card my past 4 trips to Colombia. It's a Three UK SIM and gives you 12 GB of data that lasts 12 months. Valid in 71 countries including Colombia, all of Europe, and seemingly more countries every time I check. It uses Movistar, which works great everywhere (well except San Andres where nothing really works).

Just pop it into your SIM slot and you're good to go. It's $40 for the year which is about $3. 5/ GB if you use the whole thing. You can renew when you run out of quota but it's cheaper just to get a new one (I carry a backup). No need to worry about SIM registration, expiration of card, etc.

I'm using my original WhatsApp number that I've used on phones with 3 different phone numbers. It's worked on both Colombian and US SIM cards.

No, the phone number has to be active. If you cancel your service Whatsaap stops working immediately. There are several "hacks" available online. I haven't found any that actually work. The best thing I have found is T-Mobile has a plan for $3 a month that basically just keeps the line active.

It is a DATA ONLY so if you need a number it won't work. Only time this is a headache is with Uber sometimes the guy likes to call. Now when I match I just message them right away and say I have data only, so can only message. Whatsapp calls work awesome and everyone in Colombia has WA.
