... Travel should change people in some capacity. Down to its most basic principle, the very act of leaving one's own home/neighborhood/city requires a certain exertion of efforts and appreciation of others. Far too many people can’t imagine heading to a foreign country for a couple weeks like all of us here tend to do because they are such slaves to their possessions. They’ve built a cage around themselves of debt, material goods, and jobs they can’t afford to step off of even for a week. Staying at home surrounded by your increasing pile of stuff is no way to live. So many people are so incredibly self-indulgent and never venture beyond the little comfort zones they have built around themselves. People should spend more money on experiences and not on stuff, just my opinion. Seems like so many people I know simply work, pay bills, work, pay bills, work, pay bills, etc. In our over-regulated world, travel is one of the few things left where we can all let go of routine, ruts and comfort zones and take a few risks and hope that everything will turn out just fine. I applaud all of you for getting out there and taking chances on the streets of Colombia. I’ve pretty much concluded that it IS mostly about sex as far as relationships go for me so I encourage all of you get down to MDE as often as possible and hang with a fine chica or several fine chicas for a week or so and have fun. One good place to meet girls is Mayorca mall. It is two stopps pass the Poblado station stop on the metro. I mention this mall because I alway see sets of girls walking around. Bear with me guys I am not a very good writer. What I am saying is that the mall seems set up very social and the girls look cute and approchable. There are many good malls but check out this one.

All malls and parks are good outside of Poblado. You could also try shopping for shop girls who work in retail stores.

Even though I live close, I had not been to the sports complex in Estadio for a few years. Yesterday I rode my bike over there and was blown away. I think I'll be spending much more time hanging around there. Had lunch at Claudia's cafe. The menu del dia was 4K for bean soup, salad, rice, chicken, and jugo.

I got back from my first trip to Medellin earlier this week. I was there for 10 days. Stayed at VIP. Very good experience there. Report on that in the VIP thread.

For a little context, I am 34 years old and look very, very American (my haircut, muscular build, etc). I had no problems whatsoever wherever I went and had no issues with cabbies, etc. Sure I had people staring at me but truthfully I didn’t want or need the extra attention so I had absolutely no problem sticking to Poblado / Envigado for safety reasons being this was my first trip to Medellin. I walked from the Oviedo mall to VIP, took taxis everywhere, learned the metro after a couple days and walked around centro during the daytime with no incidents at all. Maybe I was just lucky and I was the exception. Don’t know for sure but that was my experience. I did a ton of research on this site as well as crt and I had a very detailed map of the city so I knew where to go and where not to go. I want to thank all of you in advance for posting information on here. It was very helpful for my trip.

I only take trips like this once in a while. I had fun the 2 times I went to Amsterdam in recent years. Last year I went to Scotland and Belgium and I didn’t seek out any ladies on that trip at all. I do ok in the dating scene in the US but I like to take trips like this once a year or once every couple years just for a change of pace. My report will probably say lots of stuff many regulars on here probably already know.

My trip didn’t start off very good as American Airlines had to re-route me out of Minneapolis because they found a hydraulic leak in the plane right before takeoff. The only way they can get me to Miami is via Delta through Atlanta. They say I will be in Miami by 6:00 but my luggage will not be able to go with me. They said it would arrive the next day. I had 3 changes of clothes in my carry on so I opted to get on the plane to Miami. Well, my luggage didn’t arrive the next day (Friday). It arrived on Sunday. I learned my lesson and I won’t be taking American Airlines again. What route and airline do you folks usually take into town? The folks at American Airlines seemed stupid enough to buy a hooker during a vagina storm.

I arrive in Medellin on Thursday, Dec 6 and the VIP taxi driver takes me to the VIP. About 2 AM Maestro convinces me to get a chica so he calls up a 35 year old independent named Lilliana. For me it’s about the ROI – Return on Investment. Took one of the 19 year old cuties back to VIP for the night.

Saturday I check out El Hueco. If there is ever a place to work on your SA (Situational Awareness as they call it in the military) this is the place. Tons of people walking around everywhere. Very cheap shopping though. In the late afternoon I stop by El Castillo to meet up with SmoothTalker. Talked to Boyd from the Castillo for a bit also, great guy.

Got back to VIP and had Maestro call me a chica. I don’t remember her name but I saw her working at Energy a few days later. I had the phone numbers of about 6 english speaking cab drivers in Medellin but haven’t had to call them yet at this point of my trip. I flag down a taxi and when I get in the driver speaks English. It was John Jairo. One of the cabbies whose ph# I had. He drives a taxi for the Dann Carlton hotel. His cell phone is 301-503-8003. Got back to VIP and had Maestro call a chica for me. Very cute little 19 year old shows up. Took her to get something to eat but she seems bored the whole time and the sex was mechanical later on. My experiences thus far have kind of reminded me of the women here in the states in one respect – young ones don’t know much yet and tend to just lay there and the 28-40 year old women are awesome in the sack.

Monday – I call John Jairo and have him take me to eat a Bandeja Paisa. We go to the Desayunadero Restaurant which is a few blocks from Parque Lleras. Good food. I decided not to pay the 80, 000 COP weekly rate at Bodytech since I would only be able to go 2 or 3 times. I have John take me to the EROS gym which is right across the street from the Obilesko mall. Very basic gym but has everything you need and only 6000 COP for a day pass. Not to mention Energy is about 3 blocks down the street. Headed to Energy after my workout. It is indeed helpful to bring a pen and paper to the casas to write the names of the chicas down as they introduce themselves. I chose an 18 year old named Tatiana who is originally from Venezuela and is in Medellin going to college. Basic massage and right into doggy. Nice thing is that there were taxis outside of both San Diego and Fase Dos when I left.

Wednesday I called another English speaking cab driver whose number I had. His name is Octavio and he did tile work in Florida for 20+ years before being deported a couple years ago. He speaks fluent Engligh and knows where everything is. He charges 20, 000 COP for the hour and he was a great help for me on my first trip into town. Had him take me to Pablo Escobars grave which is located in the Jardines de Monte Sacro cemetery in Itagui and took some pictures. Had him drive me around centro a little bit as well to get some more pictures of statues, etc.

Octavio is not associated with any of the cab companies in town. He has his own certified cab and he makes payments on it. He will take you to and pick you up from the airport no problem as his cab gets up those hills with relative ease. Feel free to call Octavio on his cell at 301-430-2726. He welcomes your business as he is a family man trying to make a good living.

Wednesday night I wanted to go see Los Alumbrados. I second what Col Bog said on his post from 12/16 – the lights around Medellin are really something to see after Dec 7 and the Rio Medellin is lit up with hundreds of thousands of Christmas lights. I had Maestro at VIP call Lilliana for me, the sex maniac I had on my first night in town. She arrives and we head to eat some Italian food, then down to Rio Medellin to see the lights. Got back to the hotel and she tried to get me to pay for the time we spent out on the town. Lesson learned to negotiate beforehand every time. I declined saying I paid for the food and her drinks. When arriving at the airport to leave be sure to go to the exit tax office before you get in any lines because you need your exit stamp to go anywhere. It’s a little blue office labeled Impuestros and it is right near the American Airline desks. Then you wait in line for the pre-screener, then you check in, then you get sent down to the left to Immigration. I was very surprised because my carry on was full of gifts and souvenirs and I expected them to search though it big time but they didn’t unwrap any of the gifts. Miami airport still sucks. Got home, luggage in hand.

Due to my lack of Spanish I stayed strictly with the pros. I feel the same way Xion149 does with regards to pro vs. Non-pro. A couple of the chicas I met early on in my trip asked if I had a phone number and I said no. When I take trips like this, once I’m done with a chica it’s time to move on to the next one. Looking back the only reason I needed a cell phone on this trip was to stay in touch with my wingmen, Smoothtalker and Jay.

One thing I noticed about the people in Colombia is that 99% of the people are working. I saw very few beggars. Even the very poor are selling things at intersections. Cigarettes, gum and snacks they bought themselves and are selling for a profit. You can’t help but root for these people down here so I hope their economy continues to improve. The people there are very proud and it made an impression on me for sure. They possess a discipline and resolve I know I don’t have.

4 members of the Colombian Army asked me if I was a police officer in the states. I’m not a police officer but I guess COPS must be shown on TV in Colombia and I must look like a cop.

I love how there seems to be 2 meanings to vehicle horn honks –

1. Mind the gap I’m here

2. Move your ass! What are you waiting for. The street to turn green?

Of the 25 or so cab rides I took only 2 cab drivers couldn’t find the location. The cabbie who took me to Champions was so old that if he lived in the states I have no doubt his social security number would be 1.

Tip – trim your pubes down, not all the way but keep it neat at least. The chicas definitely appreciated it.

Can it be done at night time clubs? Of course. It's just much easier done in the day with normal chicas, whether it be in stores, cafes, malls, on the street, whatever.

Hey guys,

Moving past the drama, I'd like to get some words of wisdom from the MDE dudes out there.

My buddy and I are thinking of going to Colombia for a week-10 day trip. First time, although we've been to Panama a couple times. I'm fluent Spanish, both in or late 30's and enough game/looks left to be dangerous around the chicas. Interests (with relative weighting) are hot women (60%), nightlife party (30%), some daytime sightseeing/cultural activities (10%).

So, here are our questions:

1. Cali or Medellin? I know this is the MDE board, but I'd like your thoughts on one over the other.

2. Timing? Is the Flower Festival a good time to go or is it more 'family friendly' time? Any other times in the Jun-Aug timeframe?

3. Considering renting a 2 BR apt. Is the Poblado area the place to go in MDE? Also, we'll need a gym for sweating the hangovers, suggestions?

4. Dance clubs or bars recommendations to pick up chickies? Our strategy is to usually start at regular places and see if we can hook up with a non-pro and then progressively go darker over the night, ie, puta bar to strip club to mp. I know latinas 'officially' aren't about hooking up on the first nite, but beng there long enough we might be into meeting short term novias.

5. Any good casinos with blackjack and poker?

That's it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I have a track record of giving back with posts after my trips, so help a brother out.

My thoughts:

1) I would choose Medellin if I were you guys.
I know both Cali and Medellin very well and I enjoy them both really.
As Tom 33 said though, as far as crime goes, and the danger factor, Medellin wins as the better city.
Medellin also has the nicer climate and really more organized PFP scene.
Really Medellin is hard to beat overall vs any city.

2) I would stay away from any festival time. Everything in general is more crowded, and more expensive, and harder to find (ie: hotels).
The festivals are fun, just maybe better on a later visit once you get the lay of the land. IMHO.

3) I think a hotel is your best bet, especially on a first stay.
Also, admittedly, I don't know the VIP or la Casa in Medellin, I can say though that staying at el Castillo has my recommendation if you're thinking of a place like that. It's pretty tranquilo and a wealth of knowledge there to help you on a first trip.

As far as an area to stay in. If I weren't staying at one of the "Gringo" establishments (ie: VIP, Mansion, la Casa), I would never step foot in el Poblado.
That's just me though. I don't visit Colombia to see the ritz and/or meet the ritzy.
I'd choose a hotel in the el Estadio area or even el Centro. Lots of guys like the nicer hotels though. It's really a personal deal, something you'll have to see for yourself.

Maybe a couple days in one of the "gringo" places and check out the scene, and move on.

4) Well, if you speak spanish, that's a huuuuge advantage. If you're not a miserable person, you'll be swamped with too many chicas in no time.
Trust me, your big problem will be sorting them out :)

Do not be an over-bearing dummy with normal chicas, but don't be shy.
If you see someone you like, politely talk to them, ask for their number, tell them you'd love to see them.
Remember, most Colombianos are pretty aggressive, so if you have a suave manner about you, the chicas will dig you.

5) I have no clue about casinos, except I see one in the San Diego area.
I don't have time for Black Jack in Medellin, I'll save that for the sex prison areas. :)

There are all kinds of prices. You can choose to stay some place less expensive. Anyone can charge whatever they want. You vote with your feet and go elsewhere.

Americans demanding things don't get very far here.

I have been to Medellin 4 times so far and I found $40-$50 a night Hotels, as well as $50 a night Condos. There are Hotels that charge $250 a night as well in some areas. Stay wherever you want and don't complain about someones high or low prices.

ISG and the people who view it are a market, we spend money on our trips, needs hotels and apartments to stay and such, so all this advertisment is normal evolution as more visitors come to Medellin, and Colombia.

I don't have any problem with VIP Club or Casa, or Mansion, my only advice to fellow members and visitors to this board is remeber YOU are the CUSTOMER these people need your bussniess (despite what they say! ) cuase locals arnt staying at these hotels in huge numbers, demand the service and the price you want, play tough, if you want the owner to suck your cock, demand it. Don't be affraid becuase you can't speak spanish and don't kiss ass becuase your getting to nail hotties at their establishments be a dick, be an american consumer and demand higher quality and lower prices!

Th value of the dollar has declined in 5 years, and hotel prices for gringos at these establishments have increased WHY? Becuase you will pay it! There is NO REASON on gods green earth why basic rooms have gone from 40 bucks to 80 bucks in a few years! Prices here have surpassed HOTEL DEL RAY!

There are all kinds of prices. You can choose to stay some place less expensive. Anyone can charge whatever they want. You vote with your feet and go elsewhere.

Moving past the drama, I'd like to get some words of wisdom from the MDE dudes out there.

My buddy and I are thinking of going to Colombia for a week-10 day trip. First time, although we've been to Panama a couple times. I'm fluent Spanish, both in or late 30's and enough game/looks left to be dangerous around the chicas. Interests (with relative weighting) are hot women (60%), nightlife party (30%), some daytime sightseeing/cultural activities (10%).

So, here are our questions:

1. Cali or Medellin? I know this is the MDE board, but I'd like your thoughts on one over the other.

2. Timing? Is the Flower Festival a good time to go or is it more 'family friendly' time? Any other times in the Jun-Aug timeframe?

3. Considering renting a 2 BR apt. Is the Poblado area the place to go in MDE? Also, we'll need a gym for sweating the hangovers, suggestions?

4. Dance clubs or bars recommendations to pick up chickies? Our strategy is to usually start at regular places and see if we can hook up with a non-pro and then progressively go darker over the night, ie, puta bar to strip club to mp. I know latinas 'officially' aren't about hooking up on the first nite, but beng there long enough we might be into meeting short term novias.

5. Any good casinos with blackjack and poker?

That's it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I have a track record of giving back with posts after my trips, so help a brother out.

Cali is an economic basket case and dangerous. Choose MDE.

The flower festival is fine, but rooms might be hard to come by. Apartments, furnished and up to US standards, are not easy to find in MDE. Use hotels.

There are gyms all over.

You are much better off trying to meet a girl during the day and invite her out than to try bar pick-ups.
