I should have been more detailed about my observation of English language hate. It is strange that someone who was born after the Soviet Union should still feel this way. I think this is the difference in the provinces. A young woman her age, living and working in Moscow, would have a completely different attitude toward learning and speaking English. But then, Moscow is not in Russia.

Clever trick, reading the name tag in Cyrillic. Russian is not an easy language to learn, but even something as simple as learning the characters and pronunciation of the Cyrillic alphabet (which can be done on the flight over) will be an immense help. Even without knowing the name, it is perfectly acceptable to address any young woman you meet as, "девушка" (dyevushka).
