I've been to a lot of hotels in Tijuana. I give a old expired license. The ones that ask for a passport I only let them copy it I tell them I need it for when walking in the street and stopped by the police for being white. I don't have the expired license any more so I offer cash as a deposit instead of my license. It works often. But under no circumstances would I give my passport to anyone to hold. They are just hotels. There's nothing nefarious about it. I've been required to leave my ID with hotels in many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. I can't say that I've been thrilled about it, principally because they don't seem to be too careful with them, but it's part of the price of travel.

They are just hotels. There's nothing nefarious about it. I've been required to leave my ID with hotels in many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. I can't say that I've been thrilled about it, principally because they don't seem to be too careful with them, but it's part of the price of travel.
