The police allows whoever they want to control, La Mayorista or any place where drugs are tolerated! I'm there all the time Tom, where are you? Hidden and tucked away in El Poblado? Of course the Police is not going to deal the drugs themselves! Wherever in Medellin there is a tolerence for drugs in small amounts, the police allows some of these "underworld elements" to control the trade! What else are they going to do, sell it themselves? The police is there to control the situation and prevent "violent" crimes!

I know all the people in control of La Mayorista (the lower escalon), they run away like scared rats everytime the police decides to raid them, and if the police is in a good mood, they might allow them to pay a $500, 000cop fee to keep on working! If their in a bad mood or hear to many complaints regarding these folks, they arrest them! The police is there to protect the people and control the situation! It's a tolerance area for prostitution and small amounts of drugs!

Like El Periodista in El Centro where they actually sell "marihuana joints" openly! You see all the "preppy kids" there smoking their joints! Again, the police is there to protect and control the situation, not to sell drugs, hence, somebody else has to do it and it's not going to be your "local school Teacher"! In any of these areas, if the local dealer starts to get out of hand, they dissappear, like the last one in La Mayorista "El Raton" ("the rat", thus nicked named because he looked like a "rat"), and somebody nicer, attracting less attention to himself, is put in his place!

Does that answer your question Tom? Regarding if I know whose in charge of La Mayorista! Do you think I can be there 2-3 times a week for a year and not know! I don't associate with them, but I know who they are!

She's the little but large chest morena that Col Bog loved so.

It was in Medellin that Uribe and his Military Police first destroyed the Escobar Cartel. He uses the Military as Police in the whole country to fight even the all powerful FARC which used to dominate all the highways, back when nobody could leave the cities without putting themselves in danger! This was less than 8-10 years ago! That's why we are all here now, because the Military Police protects the whole country!

The same Military police that patrols all the highways and byways exiting the cities in Colombia, is the same Military police that patrols the streets in Medellin, keeping them safe! They're all over El Centro and La Mayorista, and they are not corrupt like in Costa Rica and Brazil where Americans are afraid of them! Often they go after the cocaine dealers to arrest them in front of everybody, never consumers, since there is a degree of tolerance towards consumption of Cocaine and Marihuana in small quantities ! They shake down the "traffickers", and unfortunately sometimes they do accept a little bribe here and there, they're not perfect, but they keep them on their toes! Not only don't they harrass the normal citizen, but protect them and are quick to response to any act of violence! Colombia's Military often moves their police force around, specially when they suspect that they're getting to "cozy" with the local drug dealers! They just re-shuffle them so they lose all of their connections, very smart!

Colombian police are taught to "serve and protect", from the Chief In Command, President Uribe, who, by the way, Colombians want to re-elect to a 3rd term, but unlike Chavez, Uribe, believes and respects "democracy"! The Military Police here is praised and encouraged to "Protect and Serve", and they take pride in doing this! They're hawks at protecting the subway system, I've been turn away at least once and questioned another time for looking a little "too tipsy"! They just told me to hop on a bus or a taxi where less restrictions apply! They were nice enough to direct me to the bus stop for Envigado from El Centro! This was at 4AM in the morning when the subway re-opens! I was being a "typical Paisa" and was trying to safe on the "Taxi Fare"!

This "Pride" to "Protect and Serve" comes straight from "The Top", from the man who destroyed the Cartels and saved and restored Colombia, Presidente Uribe! With a little help from good old USA (4 billion US$ given to President Uribe by the last administration to fight "terrorrism", and protect our "american's asses" down here), for which I'm thankfull for!

On a lighter note, my first house in El Trianon, Envigado was very closed to a house owned by Escobar's Mom! Escobar is now burried in Itagui, near La Mayorista and The International Club (Sriptease Bar)! When Escobar's entire Cartel was destroyed, many of the little shops in Envigado which where used to launder money for Escobar, found themselves with a business and cash that nobody ever claimed!

The cartel was wiped off the face of the Earth, and apparently the police didn't have enough records to know which businesses where legite, hence, a few locals, quite a few, found themselves set up for life! So in Envigado, a very quiet community, no prostitution, Zona Rosa "La Bota Del Dia", like Parque Lleras, you will never Know which shop owner once laundered for Escobar ! Many people did that "back in the days" (a little Lancaster,PA slang) !

Things have certainly changed in the last couple of weeks!!

Many of the places that serve the late-night crowd have been empty.

There are military police everywhere.

It is great that they are not allowing two guys on a motorcycle anymore.

Barrio Castilla last night had lots of people, but about a half as much as usual.

Buenas Aires two nights in a row, hardly even a street crowd.

Today, women´s day there were lots more people out and about.

Two nights ago, in barrio San Javier we were there when the curfew cops came and picked up one of the locals just for walking on the street.

After that time, we were the ONLY people on the street when we went looking for a taxi.

It is always good to be mindfull of the ever present danger that exists in any city but even more so in a city that once was one of the most violent cities ever.

Always be safe and consider your surroundings.

Campaign of fear unfounded

The authorities in Medellin, the pamphlet lacks credibility, so they call on citizens not to leave anonymous messages to terrorize any obscure.

I believe that some those "fears" a reasonable. First of all, Medellin does not seem too dangerous to me, compared to some other places I've been(in Eastern Europe). But one Colombian friend has given me a number of warnings, which I think I underestimated, but now they kinda correspond to what some people are writing here. For example he was afraid to take Metro-cable to the last stations, also walk in the Centro at night, and go to some parties which could be attended by "dangerous" people pretending to be somebody else. Some of these may sound crazy, but it is probably a good idea to listen to locals sometime. Also a taxi driver was looking at us like we were crazy going to el Centro at night, and he told me to take great care there.

Also it looks like here some people are trying to develop this idea that every colombian girl is an innocent angel, nice person, beautiful, etc.. Just because she is colombian or paisa, or whatever. I believe this is not true. Of course the majority are suposedely better than the majority of AW, but there are some really nasty girls. Some can be violent if for some reason they become upset with something. While most of the girls I've met were very nice, I've met one who turned out to be really greedy and violent while pretending and acting a good one when she was sober. I also saw that she receives dozens emails from gringos everyday, and she does not give a shit about them. She just laughs at their "love" letters and picks the most "promising" ones. She showed me some emails, were I could see that gringos are seriously are in love with her.. Later I learned my lesson about her hard way when she got drunk and showed her real face. If you feel something is wrong with her at the beginning(for example, she's too late for your meeting or she's trying to postpone sex telling some BS) walk away ASAP. They can be good actors and liars. Also if you've met her as a working girl, don't assume she does not expect money if she hangs out with you as a GF. It's better to ask her in advance if you're gonna pay her or not and how much. And if you do not know her well, I would not invite her to my place. But it's my opinion only. Cuidate mucho.

I also would guess that most likely Colombians would laugh at us if they read what most people write here. Because, when I read the thread about the country I'm originally from, I'm surprised with how much stupid ideas people come up with and what they think about girls and people in general, even those who consider themselves my country "professionals". So I would assume that in general we have no idea what we are talking about here, unless here are some real Colombians.

Just a coincidence but it does relate somewhat to what we have been trying to tell this guy. Early this morning I received an email telling me a girl I had come to know really well from My Space, and whom I eventually met in Cali was killed on Tuesday. Very sad indeed. Yes we have violence everywhere in the world, but in Colombia it is much more rampant. Below is the content from the email.

"I am sorry to inform you all that Jenny is no longer with us. She got shot to death in her hometown of Cali, Colombia, on Tuesday, March 06, at around 6:30 PM. A funeral was held here in Cali on Friday. March 6th at 3:30PM. In this senseless act of violence, a person who stole her purse also took her life from her, as a consequence, none of us will ever be able to talk or see her again"

I also new her very well through friends and can vouch for Urbans Story 100%! It is a very sad traumatic day for me for she was a sweet girl. Still working on the details but I know she was killed coming out of Exito resisting robbery. Im not sure which Exito either. I was reluctant to post the details though without a link that to back it up. I just saw this girl in January at chipechape, how tragic.

Without prompting, a semi-pro amiga told me this week that she was concerned about going back to her barrio (Castilla) alone late at night, and pulled up a PDF of the "social cleansing" threat (that prompted this discussion thread) as an explanation for me when I wondered (I didn't see who she got it from, multi-forward email). She seemed concerned about looking trashy and had seemed to dress down because of that.

She said that some significant (?) criminal had been killed in her neighborhood 2 weeks ago and people had been on edge since then. She seemed to say the police in Poblado were effective but not so much where she was (unclear if less motivated, less of them, less mandate, or what). I wasn't able to pursue nuance because of my middling spanish. :-P

Note that I've not verified any of this with anybody else yet, or heard of any other killings, but worthy of note.

I tend to be low-key as much as possible anyway, but interesting. As others have noted, we are visitors here in MDE, so best to tread lightly-- I try to take the lead from my MDE friends.

Hey guy, at $25US a night or $125 a week, I don't think it's about money, money, money! Other places owned by gringos charge for a day, what I charge for a week!

I do it for fun, as a hobby! I've stated that many times! Since there is a cost involved, can't do it for free! I started renting at My Place in La Mayorista after 8 months of partying there with my friends! One day I decided, why not share it with others and make a "little", I stress, "little" money in the process!

Oh, by the way, I was at la Mayorista again last night! Shock and awe! I had gotten tired, a little, of La Mayorista because all the girls knew me and the 20-30 "cuties" were already a "notch" on my belt, I'm not much for repeating! But since they opened the additional 2 4AM bars for drinking and dancing a lot of new talent is comming La Mayorista way!

Where I used to say that about 30% where "cuties", I'd say more like 50% were so now! And you're hearig this from a not too shabby guy at "50", most people think I'm between 34-38! I do good even in Tampa, Florida! I had to phuck my cousins'girlfriend in Tampa because she would'nt leave me alone! She got lucky because we had spent most of the night at the "Winghouse", something like "Hooters", but nicer! Those cute little blondes, scantily dressed, got my motors going!

Well anyways, last night I met "Geraldine", after a Colombian Marketting Rep. For a textile co. And a very nice Truck driver (looked more like an accountant) pointed her out to me! She had the face of an "angel", her body looked thin, but her face was captivating! She was singing with the local "musicians" when I called her over for a drink! She came over and started looking at me with "flirting" eyes, not hooker flirting, and totally ignoring my Colombian friends! When I excused myself to go to the bathroom she left my friends and only returned when I did! Then she wanted to sing me a song, for which I payed the musicians $5, 000cop! I becamed enamored with that "angel" face!

Well, to make a long story short, I asked her back to My Place! When we got there, she said, Oh! I've been here before, just last night! Then she said, but we didn't do anything! I guess she didn't want to spoil the moment! It turned out that my guest, had the same exquisite taste that I have! I kind of believed her because he told me that he often brings girls up just to talk, and pays them anyways!

Well, anyways, this beautiful "angel" turned out, not only to have a beautiful face, but what seemed "thin" clothed, turned out to be shapely and full legs with a milk white little body! I fell in love. She's one of the few girls who hasn't asked me for the money up front! I Just kissed her down there while she m. , she really enjoyed it! I didn't go in because I wanted to impress the fact that I was not in a hurry! I just let her hold my. So that at least she would know, it was no "small matter"! With her I'll repeat indefinitely, and suggested a closer relationship, which she considered! "Geraldine", my new little "angel face"!

My Colombian friends were cheering me because they could also feel the chemistry between us! She wants me to see her tonight, don't know if I can!

When they murdered Robert Vignola in Cali, they were two guys on a motorcycle. When they murdered a Gringo in Barranquilla recently, they were two guys on a motorcycle. When an armed robbery took place at a restaurant I was eating at in Barranquilla, they were two guys on a motorcycle. When a Gringo I know witnessed the murder of a gym owner outside a gym in Cali, they were two guys on a motorcycle. When another Gringo I know witnessed the murder of a guy at an adjacent table in a videobar on Avenida Sexta in Cali, they were two guys on a motorcycle.
