The machine print out says 2.29 per 1$, 662.00R = $289.56, that is good info , but here is the truth, my online bank says in USD that $298.24 was deducted, so the comissiom is around $9.00 for the currency exchange. Around 3 %, so I guess that is fair.

The best ATMS are HSBC, as they give a print out, but as you see, the print ot you get does not relect the real exchange rate. I would guess it is always about 3% less than the rate on your receipt.

I checked several receipts and it is always similar. Just an FYI, also, most Brasilian banks do not have ATMs that will work with international ATM cards, for sure HSBC and certain machines in Banco do Brasil locations will work.

This commision that they charge is outrageous, this last trip of mine I brought mostly cash and got good rates at the various cambios in town but when I used an ATM I was charged the same commision rate also. Cash is King.

Ibiza, I believe that it is your bank charging you the 3%, not HSBC.

Are you using an ATM card or a credit card? On my last trip I made three withdrawals with my ATM card, two from HSBC and one from a different bank and I was never charged any fee. My online bank matched the HSBC receipt exactly.

Maybe I've just been lucky / unlucky: The only place on this planet where I've been "ripped off" by a taxi driver is BA (I got some fake notes in exchange when I paid for the taxi - unfortunately didn't have proper change with me). Whereas in Rio I've been riding cabs safely. Sometimes they don't want to put the meter on (late at night, outside of "tourist attractions" like Help, Barbarella, etc.), but then I've simply stepped out from the taxi and stopped the next one (and the first driver didn't shoot me in the back).

I hear your pain. I have been in the same boat as I bet many of the brothers here. I gave up on the 1-2 hour sessions long time ago. I am always trying to maximize the most i can get for money spent. Happy to report that 4x4 has really upgraded the staff, I went there tonight and wholly shit what a difference a month can make. I went before Xmas and it was slow and the girls were OK. I do not think that the comparison of Rio and BA makes real sense.

BA is so sofisticated, great architecture, excellent restaurants, good theaters, something for laid-back people which love sofistication and a cultured life. Rio is the jungle, wild, with wild GPs (with all the GFE possibilities) whereas in BA it is more the calculated cold p4p where you will never ever have this GFE experience.

Both cities have their pros and cons - just select what suits you.

I for my part love Rio, Buzios, Angra, Salvador etc., but from time to time BA is a change.

I'm with Francis and all the other BA dissenters. Had my first trip to BA last August and it was mildly dissapointing. Not really sure why so many people rave about it but Jackson's dedicated a whole website to Argentina so there's probably more info than any other country. The pros there are colder, more mercenary and don't like to do all nighters and any above average escort is in high demand and charges too much . Non pros don't seem to be as possible as in Brazil. In fact the only non pro I met there was a paulista in a cafe and after talking with her for only a few minutes I was done with BA and was longing for Brazil.
